Xenophobia: FG Hints at Possible Ret@liation Against South Africa Over Att@cks on Nigerians
Repatriation of Nigerians in South Africa Is On Course— Minister Of Foreign Affairs Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu
Nigeria’s Minister Of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has assured that the Federal Government’s planned evacuation of Nigerians affected by ongoing att@cks and tensions in South Africa remains on course.
She said the delay was due to documentation and screening procedures required by South African authorities before affected Nigerians can be repatriated.
“The repatriation is on course. Mr. President himself has reiterated the fact that this aircraft must come to South Africa and our citizens who are imperiled will have the chance of getting on this aircraft to be brought back to their country,” she said.
According to the minister, the number of Nigerians seeking to return is increasing, while both countries continue verification and clearance processes before travel arrangements can be completed.
Odumegwu-Ojukwu disclosed that President Bola Tinubu directed the immediate establishment of a crisis response unit at Nigeria’s Consulate in Johannesburg and the Nigerian Mission in Pretoria to coordinate assistance for affected citizens.
She rejected claims that Nigerians facing att@cks in South Africa are illegal migrants, insisting that many are legitimate business owners and residents whose shops and properties have been looted or destroyed.
“That is absolutely untrue. Citizens are being har@ssed. Their properties are being looted. Criminal actions are perpetrated on our citizens,” she stated.
Expressing disappointment over the treatment of Nigerians, she recalled Nigeria’s support for South Africa during the anti-apartheid struggle.
On the possibility of retaliatory measures, Odumegwu-Ojukwu said the option remains under consideration and has not been ruled out, although any decision would be taken at the highest level of government. She added that coordination with relevant agencies is continuing without delay.
