New: In a phone call with me after U.S.-Canada trade negotiations collapsed, President Trump suggested the US had added conditions late during talks.
“That sounds like me,” Trump responded, when asked about Canadian officials' assertion about US late-stage demands.
When I pressed, “So you don't deny it?”
The president replied, “No, no, I don't deny anything. So no, they have to pay a fair amount. And if they don't pay a fair amount, we won't make a deal. That's fine.“
More on the broader effects of tariffs here: https://t.co/lIJwVSpYkD
@sarobertson_ The simple reality is that Canada collects 0% actual tariff revenue on the vast majority of U.S. dairy imports because most shipments enter completely duty-free within allocated Tariff-Rate Quotas.
Not hitting the quotas means US dairy products enter Canada DUTY FREE you morons!
US meat is banned in 160 countries
US milk is illegal in Europe
US 60% of food contains chemicals banned elsewhere
NOBODY NEEDS TRUMP CONTAMINATED FOOD
Check your food is Canadian not only for patriotism but for your own health
Trump post yesterday morning: “WE DON’T NEED CANADA, THEY NEED US!”
Trump in a tele-rally yesterday evening: “You know, selfishly, we need aluminum in this country. We don't have it. We get it all from Canada, for the most part, and we need it badly.”

President Trump's criticism of Canada has been filled with lies – a remarkable variety of assertions that either wildly distort a kernel of truth or are plain made up. Here's just part of the list, which doesn't include yesterday's nonsense: https://t.co/xa5mtsrnnZ
Fact: Canada has a brave and professional military. It has deployed into combat with us many times, including D-Day. Canadian troops, under my NATO command, faced intense fire in Afghanistan where many were killed in action. I honor their memory and salute them. 🇨🇦 https://t.co/9kkvWXHTub
The White House releases a statement saying that it is done giving Canada a “free ride”
It is essentially just a list of claims President Trump has made throughout the trade war

Today VP Vance said Canada and China are "the two worst countries" on trade policy. That's an opinion, his right. But because Vance specifically complained about Canada's super-high dairy tariffs (which, again, only kick in above a quota), here's some interesting WTO data via @trevortombe:
96.7% of US agricultural exports to Canada are duty-free compared to...4.5% of US agricultural exports to China.

THE PAST 24 HOURS in the Canada-U.S. trade war:
• Trump threatens 50% tariffs on Canadian cars, trucks, auto parts & steel starting Jan. 1, 2027.
• Carney says a deal with the U.S. is still possible, but only if Washington comes to the table with the “right attitude” and respects Canadian sovereignty.
• Carney says Canada will begin talks with the EU this fall on a “much stronger and deeper” economic and security partnership.
• Trump says Canada should “fall in line” or face consequences “far WORSE” than existing tariffs.
• Ford tells Trump he can “kiss my ass.”
• Ford says Canada needs to “throw everything and the kitchen sink” at Trump, including potentially restricting exports of Ontario’s electricity and critical minerals.
• Ontario expands its $1B financing program to help tariff-hit businesses keep workers on the job.
• Trump calls Ford and Carney “clowns” and calls Ford a “flunky.”
• Ford calls Trump a bully, dictator and loser and tells Americans: “don’t vote in a person who’s gonna kill your jobs.”
• Ford says he has “a lot of real estate” on his ass for Trump to work with.
• And then, this morning: Trump says the U.S. is seriously considering renaming Lake Ontario to “Lake America.”
• At 11 a.m.: Carney is expected to announce countermeasures & new supports for Canadian workers.
RETURNING US BOOZE to Canadian shelves doesn’t mean it should get the shelf space it used to.
Other products have moved onto those shelves and should stay.
Put a small selection of Yankee plonk on a few short shelves at high prices. Or sell it from the storeroom like the 1980s.
@TaraArmstrongBC Your comments are awful. How does being a trans woman have anything to do with this? So what is your explanation for all the shooters in other mass shootings? Pulling in US shootings into your argument? So 1 shooting by a trans woman in Canada is now an epidemic?
