Here’s to compassion and grace, the compassion we show one another and the compassion we extend to all living things.

So much unnecessary suffering in the animal kingdom is caused by our waste, our debris, our indifference. We should never forget that our lives are interwoven with the lives of the creatures with whom we share this planet. Their fate and ours are connected.

And yet, even amid so much loss, there are people who care. People working on solutions. And people like this man, who simply saw a living creature in distress and jumped into the water to help.

Never underestimate such small acts of kindness. Compassion for the vulnerable, whether human or animal, reveals something powerful about our humanity.

May we see more of this.
