Ted Turner, founder of CNN, died today at 87. https://t.co/KFwXB1Wzi5 Most obituaries will focus on his enormous impact on the media world, but I'd also note that he revolutionized philanthropy. Before him, rich people gave to museums, universities, churches. They spent more money buying paintings of women than actually helping women or girls. And then in 1997, Ted changed that almost by accident in a speech. "I was on my way to New York to make the speech,” Ted recalled to me later. “I just thought, what am I going to say?” So, to make the speech interesting, he announced he was going to give $1 billion to the UN to fight global poverty. (Here's the piece where he described how he made that gift: https://t.co/U8AXRVLjRB ) That started a competition among tycoons to be more philanthropic and led many more to try to help the needy. He made giving cool, and he saved countless lives. RIP, Ted Turner, and thanks for all you did.

The Iraqi Parliament’s proposal to lower the legal marriage age for girls from 18 to 9 years old is an assault on childhood.
Girls are not spouses—they are children who deserve their right to grow up with protection and dignity.
I’m nothing but proud today of my Pop, our President, Joe Biden, who has served our country with every bit of his soul and with unmatched distinction. Not only has he been—and will continue to be—the most effective president of our lifetime, but he has likely already cemented himself as the most effective and impactful public servant in our nation’s history. He has been at the center of, and had a material impact on, literally every single major issue that our country and world has faced for 50 years. Our world is better today in so many ways thanks to him. To the Americans who have always had his back, keep the faith. He will always have ours.

The #earthquake may have disrupted my remarks at the UN Security Council, but what I called for is far from earth shattering.
On behalf of all children in Gaza, I demanded action.
The world has the tools to address this crisis. It merely lacks the political will to use them.
A Conversation with Humanitarian David Gressly https://t.co/snlmfP40De "it was a political problem that had to be solved politically before launching into technical problem-solving. Only the @UN was on the ground to do it." via @BetterWorldOrg
Imagine a continent where nearly 70% of the population is under 30, brimming with energy and potential. This is Africa today. And by 2100, nearly 40% of a projected 10.3 billion global population will reside here. Young leaders are redefining justice: https://t.co/Q3BLIdN5bC
Progress is still possible.
