The Department of Labor just released county-level data on childcare costs for the FIRST TIME EVER
Turns out millions of Americans are spending painfully high amounts on childcare
@chu_youngmin responds: "I think we have to interrogate 'choice' - socialization takes place from the moment a child is born. Forces in the family, outside the family, drive boys and girls, women and men, towards some kinds of activities, and not others.”
@chu_youngmin shares that a conservative estimate of unpaid care work in Minnesota is $88.1 billion per year. If it were included, unpaid care work would account for nearly 18% of the MN’s total GDP.
“Because unpaid labor is disproportionately done by women [60%], accounting for unpaid work in GDP is important to promote gender equality- it’s a way of recognizing and valuing this unpaid work.” - @chu_youngmin
