James Talarico is getting the full statewide makeover: softer language, Bible references, careful camera angles, and a campaign trying to introduce Texas to a reasonable young moderate.

Small problem. Old James keeps showing up with receipts.

In 2020, Talarico thanked activists for linking climate change with “white supremacy and capitalism.” He called capitalism an oppressive system worth dismantling. Then he compared Texas oil to cassette tapes and said it was “not gonna last.”

That clip should look fantastic in West Texas.

The makeover crew can polish the bio all they want. They still have to explain why the guy running to represent Texas once talked about one of its biggest industries like a dead technology waiting for the trash can.

Then there’s the religion package. Talarico leans hard into Christianity while pushing some of the most progressive social politics in the race. He declared trans children “perfect,” “beautiful,” and “sacred.” At church, a transgender pride flag hung behind the cross while he preached.

After Roe fell, he urged Biden to take “extraordinary steps,” including leasing federal property to abortion clinics and hiring abortion providers as federal employees.

And the anti-billionaire warrior? His campaign was perfectly happy benefiting from millions tied to billionaire Reid Hoffman while Talarico complained about “billionaire-controlled government.”

This is why campaign consultants hate archives.

They can rewrite the website. They can swap out slogans. They can teach a candidate which words scare suburban voters and which Bible verse tests well with focus groups.

They cannot send a cease-and-desist letter to his own mouth.

The new James Talarico has a branding problem.

Dear White Liberal Women,

If Lindsay Clancy is found not guilty of killing her three children, this country has to be honest about what that ruling means.

If a woman’s biology and mental state after childbirth can erase criminal responsibility for the deaths of Cora, Dawson, and Callan, then the same condition cannot be treated as irrelevant in every other high-stakes role.

Women should not be eligible for:

- Combat roles
- Armed law-enforcement positions
- Unsupervised managerial authority over staff or budgets
- Judicial office or jury service
- Licensure as pilots, air-traffic controllers, or commercial drivers
- Independent practice as surgeons or emergency physicians
- Sole legal custody of minor children
- Positions in childcare, teaching, or school administration
- Gun ownership

They should also be subject to a more strict background check when applying for a job and every woman should have to face a psych evaluation every month.

You cannot argue that postpartum illness is powerful enough to excuse the killing of three children and, in the same breath, argue it is too minor to restrict power, weapons, votes, or the care of other people’s kids.

Either the condition is that serious, or it is not.

Pick one.
