Unpopular opinion: There is no such thing as an LGBTQ community. We have almost certainly never been in community. We are ruptured and divided by race, gender identity, sex/uality, politics, orientation toward normativity, apathy and enmity. Rarely have we ever shared the same spaces and have more often been thrust together as consequences of similar technologies of violence (your cellmate is not necessarily your friend)--not care, politics or affinity--much like "non-white" and "racial minorities" we are defined and comingled based on the fact of who we are not. There could, maybe, be an LGBTQ community one day, but that requires intention...not merely familiar violences. To assume otherwise is to remain in an overdetermined hellscape and foreclose the possibly of liberation.

I have to say being in the field and interviewing are by and far the most comfortable I feel doing sociology. I’ve always wondered why that may be.

But today after an interview it hit me. I often find myself relating more to participants than I do to academic peers.
