Aaliyah Fortner was just 23 years old. She was nonverbal and autistic—and she depended entirely on the adults around her to keep her safe.

Instead, authorities allege she was starved and brutally abused inside a North Carolina group home.

By the time Aaliyah died, she weighed only 84 pounds, having reportedly lost more than 40% of her body weight in just six months.

Court documents allege her caregiver repeatedly tased her, beat her with objects, broke a broom over her body, and even stomped on her head.

Aaliyah couldn't speak. She couldn't tell anyone what was happening behind those doors. She couldn't call for help.

And perhaps the most infuriating part? The state had reportedly already stripped this same caregiver of guardianship over another nonverbal adult—yet she was still allowed to operate a home where Aaliyah was placed in her care.

Aaliyah deserved protection.
She deserved dignity.
She deserved people who would notice.
She deserved to live.

Every agency responsible for allowing this young woman to fall through the cracks should have to answer one question:

HOW DID YOU LET THIS HAPPEN?
