Kenya has strengthened its radiation safety and nuclear regulatory framework through the establishment of the Kenya Nuclear Regulatory Authority (KNRA), enhanced inspection and enforcement systems, expanded radiation monitoring, and investment in training radiation safety professionals. The country has also been designated as one of the regional centres for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Postgraduate Education Course in Radiation Protection.
At the Regional Meeting on Radiation Safety Infrastructure in Africa in Nairobi, we reiterated our commitment to maintaining the highest standards of radiation protection as the use of nuclear and radiation technologies expands across healthcare, agriculture, industry, research, and environmental management.
The meeting hosted by the IAEA brings together Ministers, Permanent/Principal Secretaries, regulators, and technical experts from African countries to share experiences and develop action plans aimed at strengthening radiation safety infrastructure across the continent.
Kenya would pursue legislation focused on safety, including reviewing the institutional placement of the Kenya Nuclear Regulatory Authority (KNRA), which is currently domiciled in the Health ministry.
