Open Letter
Dearest Babar,

It is being written with malice to none & based on serious observations & to derive viable conclusions.
I didn’t see the legendary Hanif Mohammad, Saeed Ahmad, Imtiaz Ahmad or Waqar Hassan bat. Rest I have witnessed live all those who represented Pakistan in the 1970s & until now.
You are to me right up there, having all the qualifications first to ascend to the top amongst the best ever in Pakistan, which I think you would have had, if not gotten distracted & accepted a pressured coexistence). And consequently to be at the top in the world, of your generation, all generations.

I must concede, being your immeasurable fan I expected, inspired by your unwavering self-belief, you would perform leaving the connoisseurs awe-inspired nonetheless your own success was lost somewhere at the back end.
That ICC World Cup 2023 didn’t inspire you into making the headlines could always be ignored however your ability to self-correct & overcome a weakness also went missing.
This left most of us skeptical.
It wasn’t you.
Presumably the burden of captaincy, to vindicate yourself having taken one-ended, independent decisions & picked the team, high on expectations and some irrelevant & untimely criticism, even the Chairman of PCB’s Management Committee taking you on midway through the tournament may well have left you distracted.
Still a batsman of your caliber, who was born to wield his bat has to constantly raise the benchmark.
AFTERMATH
Don’t take PCB’s knee jerk reactions seriously, re-define your priorities, recalibrate & focus on your batting, the art.
Outscore all your detractors & the conspirators.
Don’t be damned or worry if captaincy is taken away from you.
It didn’t really belong to you, anyway.
CAPTAINCY
Listen, you had no previous experience of captaining even a domestic team when your were appointed to lead Pakistan, a whimsical decision. That you accepted made it willful.

You were made the captain primarily someone fell for your most distinguished batsmanship.
It was somewhat by default- Sarfraz Ahmad was being chastised, Azhar Ali again not running favours in the cauldrons of power.

Furthermore, you couldn’t come out of your zone & remained dependent on the players you felt comfortable with regardless of their merit, situational requirements/adjustments, their utility in different formats & trusted which you had.
This made you power centric, too reliant on the product you thought could help you win in all conditions.
I believe, you were blinded & it seemed a case of vulgar optimism.
It even had a touch of arrogance. Seemingly you had begun to enjoy power, as it showed.
It reflected as an evidence of PLAYER POWER.
You did wrong not picking up Abrar Ahmad or preferring Hassan Ali ahead of other deserving for the ICC World Cup 2023.
Overconfident or self reliant you didn’t assess the conditions, the changing trends, contemporary asks, also, as it seemed, didn’t allow the players who could infringe your ‘safe’ space with your people around.
You needed to evolve, you needed to grow into a leader and not someone hanging out in his place of comfort.

You couldn’t really set the tone, seemed indecisive, not coming up with a viable team combination.
Your template, your style and method didn’t get you the results- there seemed no plan B.
The spinners you picked looked appalling, such was their form & skillset.

Retrospectively we all learn- that’s fine. You will also. Virtue stands. You only need to bide your time and do what you do the best - bat everyone in the world out of competition.

The best will be to stand in adversity like a man, take all the blames & move on progressively.

Don’t even listen to people- it’s only noise pollution.

Remember changing a captain won’t necessarily help reconstruct Pakistan cricket, a BABAR AZAM scoring runs will surely make it relevant to the world.
