When Light Horse Harry was 21 years old, he turned a tavern into a fortress and fended off a British unit with just seven men.

It was January 20, 1778. Lee had been raiding British supply lines so effectively that the enemy sent a large body of cavalry to grab him. They managed to trap him and seven others inside the Spread Eagle Tavern.

Lee would not surrender. The tiny group barricaded the doors, manned every window they could cover and unleashed fire on the attackers.

When the British tried to take the horses from a nearby stable, Lee had his men cheer and shout that American infantry was charging to the rescue.

The bluff worked. The British pulled back and rode off. The story raced through the Continental Army.

Washington was so impressed he offered Lee a coveted spot as an aide-de-camp. Lee turned it down, telling the general he was “wedded to my sword.”

The stand at the tavern added to his growing legend that made him one of the most feared light cavalry leaders of the war.

And his son, Robert E. Lee was born almost exactly 29 years later. January 19, 1807.
