Proud to get a message from a Dublin Time Machine reader stationed in Camp Shamrock! So let take a quick look at this home of Irish Peacekeeping men and women, as Lebanon and Israel potentially creep closer to war.
Camp Shamrock is roughly 7 km from the Israeli-Lebanese border. The Irish mission is to uphold stability along the Blue Line, the informal but heavily contested border established by UN Resolution 1701.
It's home to about 333 Irish peacekeepers, part of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). UNIFIL is Ireland’s largest overseas deployment, part of a joint Irish and Polish Battalion. The Poles and Paddy get along well.
Our troops have served in Lebanon for nearly five decades, working to stabilise an area which is again lurching toward the abyss since the 7th of October attacks and resultant carnage.
Daily life at Camp Shamrock demands a constant state of readiness, with Israeli drones buzzing overhead and the ever-present possibility of stray rockets. Our troops often seek shelter in bunkers. While the camp itself hasn’t been directly hit, the constant alarms have heightened anxiety among everyone.
Despite these risks and challenges, Irish troops are constantly interacting with local communities, building infrastructure, and supporting residents in war-torn villages through Civil Military Co-operation (CIMIC) projects.
These outreach efforts are key to fostering goodwill with local Lebanese residents, who live amidst tensions and shifting alliances between Christian, Muslim, and other groups. By all accounts, the Irish are well liked and trusted.
The Dáil recently increased its UNIFIL deployment to 340 soldiers, adding protection for convoys and communications due to the rising security threat. The recent risks doubtless make the monthly memorial ceremony at the monument to 48 fallen irish soldiers in Tibnine all the more poignant. Keep safe lads, keep doing us proud. 🇮🇪🕊✌🏻

@RTEUpfront@LimeTreeTheatre Excluding Independent candidates from the @RTEUpfront debate on Limerick's mayoral race is sheer nonsense and undermines the debate's credibility. If they can't include potential winners, the debate shouldn't go ahead.
