It makes sense if you don’t feel a deep well of empathy for someone who made a career out of refusing to show it for others. You are not obligated to manufacture sorrow for someone who never extended any sympathy for you, your community, or the people you care about.
You can hold both “I don’t wish this on anyone” and “I’m having a hard time feeling sad about it” at the same time.
You can acknowledge that this is not to be celebrated while also recognizing the deeper rooted issues at hand.
We don’t yet know what motivated the person who shot and killed Charlie Kirk, but this kind of despicable violence has no place in our democracy. Michelle and I will be praying for Charlie’s family tonight, especially his wife Erika and their two young children.
We can't be against gun violence and support it at the same time. I don't agree with Kirk and anything he stands for, but this shouldn't have happened. No one should be celebrating.
