Mining currently contributes around 2.2% in India's GDP but it has immense potential to accelerate its GDP contribution to 5% in the next 10 years. The sector will therefore play a significant role in achieving the Net Zero Target. Focus areas remain health and safety of miners, along with new age technologies and skilled workforce.

Dr Sudip Bhattacharyya, Deputy Director General of GSI, Government of India emphasized that critical minerals play a significant role in de-carbonization and achieving the net zero target of India, at the 17th edition of Global Mining Summit in Kolkata.

He mentioned that the Ministry of Mines has initiated measures to accelerate the exploration of critical minerals in India. Highlighting the importance of a circular economy, he underlined that India possesses significant deposits of critical minerals and rare earth elements, which are often lost through the mineral waste of major minerals.
