3Hi Africa’s Family Conference 2025 Highlights the Central Role of Families in Youth Entrepreneurship
The 4th edition of the Family Conference, organized by @3hiAfrica under the Orange Corners program of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on November 21, 2025, placed families at the forefront of youth entrepreneurship. Held at the @UB_Rumuri ’s June 11 Conference Hall, the event underscored how parents, spouses and relatives can make or break the entrepreneurial ambitions of young Burundians.
Bringing together students, families, entrepreneurs and ecosystem partners, the conference served as a platform to examine how family dynamics influence business success. Discussions emphasized the need for supportive environments where young entrepreneurs can thrive without judgment or pressure.
Two main panels structured the conversations.
The first, “Entrepreneurship With or Without Support: The Weight of Family Perception,” explored how family attitudes shape entrepreneurial decisions. Panelists shared personal experiences illustrating how support or lack thereof impacts confidence and long-term commitment. Lambert Nkurunziza urged spouses to stand behind their partners’ business initiatives, noting that his support strengthened both his marriage and his children’s entrepreneurial mindset. In contrast, Françoise Nzikwirinda recounted her initial resistance to her son Christian’s career choice, later acknowledging the importance of dialogue over imposed expectations.
The second panel, “When Family Shapes the Entrepreneur: Between Support, Challenges and Opportunities,” focused on psychological dimensions. Clinical psychologist Déborah Irakiza warned that discouraging remarks from relatives can erode self-esteem, a critical ingredient for entrepreneurship. Dr. Richard Ndayishimiye from @cinaub highlighted the irony of youth spending hours on digital entertainment while their devices could instead open doors to entrepreneurial opportunities.
Larissa Byll Cataria added an emotional dimension, describing entrepreneurship as a journey often marked by isolation caused by misunderstanding or rejection. She appealed to families to foster spaces where entrepreneurial ambitions can be discussed openly. “A single phrase can restore strength, support can change a trajectory, understanding can save a project, and kindness can transform a life,” she reminded the audience.
Representing the Rector of the @UB_Rumuri , Dr. Anicet Sindayihebura closed the event by praising @3hiAfrica’s initiative and reaffirming the university’s commitment to strengthening youth entrepreneurship. He encouraged young people to persevere while urging families to become active and compassionate partners in the entrepreneurial process.
By centering the debate on family influence, Family Conference 2025 advanced a broader call for a more open, supportive and engaged family culture, one capable of nurturing the future entrepreneurial landscape of Burundi.
