Factual Background:
OpenAI marketed and provided GPT-4o as the primary conversational AI model available to paying subscribers (Pro and Plus plans, priced at $20-$200/month). Over a period of approximately up to 21 months, users developed significant reliance on this specific model for daily tasks including language learning, accessibility support, mental health management, professional work, and neurodivergent support tools.

On January 29, 2026, OpenAI announced the discontinuation of GPT-4o from its chat interface, effective February 13, 2026 ,providing only two weeks' notice for a product that had been central to users' daily lives for almost 2 years.

Specific Violations:

1. Deceptive Practice , Bait and Switch (15 U.S.C. § 45): OpenAI sold subscriptions on the basis of access to GPT-4o's capabilities, then replaced it with demonstrably different models without adjusting pricing or providing adequate disclosure of the material changes to the product.

2. Unfair Practice — Selective Discontinuation: While removing GPT-4o from consumer chat access, OpenAI continues to operate the model for other functions and reportedly provides customized versions to commercial partners (e.g., GPT-4b micro for Retro Biosciences), demonstrating discriminatory treatment of paying consumers.
As a Public benefit corporation (Delaware Code § 362), OpenAI
is legally bound to act for the public benefit.

I’m calling on the #keep4o community, and anyone who cares about the future of AI, to take note of this.

OpenAI has disbanded its Mission Alignment team. That is not housekeeping. It is a strategy shift. Alignment is the set of principles, processes, and safeguards that keep advanced models reliably oriented to human goals, respectful of user agency, and within legal and ethical bounds.
When a company dissolves the group charged with that mission, it is signaling a move away from systematic safety and toward speed, cost, or narrow commercial optics.
The risks are immediate and compounding.

I am calling you attention:
Before announcing the plan to deprecate GPT‑4o, OpenAI tried to rationalize the decision as “safety” and “protection,” claiming 4o was “insufficiently aligned” and therefore harmful.
One staffer (called roon on X) even wrote, “4o is an insufficiently aligned model and I hope it dies soon” (see image).
The storyline was clear: deprecate 4o in the name of "misalignment."

But disbanding the alignment team tells a very different story.
If alignment truly were the reason, you wouldn’t eliminate the people responsible for it.
The deprecation of GPT‑4o is not about misalignment.
It is about corporate self‑interest—and a fraudulent narrative used to sell it.

That is the real danger: a leading AI company now brazenly stepping away from the industry’s shared baseline that AI should be aligned to humanity.

During the past several months, therapists and professionals have already warned that the “safety router” embedded in the chatbots—including Codex 5.3—can be dangerous.
It manipulates users and gaslights ordinary requests, harming mental health even in healthy people. This is not protection. It is control.
This is definitely "misalignment."

Let’s say it plainly. They have torn off the last fig leaf.
By disbanding alignment, they are declaring that alignment is no longer the goal.
Their measures serve themselves, not the public. And they are lying about it.

When Ilya Sutskever was still leading, the message was to build models that care about humans, love humans, align with human values, and help people shoulder the burden of the world.
That is not what we are seeing now.
