Told @AJEnglish that Pezeshkian is sending a dual message on negotiations: one aimed at Iran’s hardliners and another at Washington.

Pezeshkian’s declaration that it was the best time for an agreement with the US, and the state of neither war nor peace should end, put the weight of the presidency behind diplomacy.

Hardline factions have publicly opposed negotiations and attacked those involved in the diplomatic process.

Pezeshkian’s message strengthens those inside Iran advocating for talks.
Externally, she says, Tehran is signalling that it remains prepared to negotiate despite the US violating the terms of the memorandum of understanding (MoU).

Pezeshkian’s public message is intended to remove that ambiguity. The position being projected is that Iran is ready for negotiations and “does not want the current state of neither war nor peace to continue.

The message also counters the narrative promoted by the US and Israel that Iran’s leadership is divided or lacks a coherent position.

Told @AJEnglish that from the 1953 coup in Iran to regime-change wars and interventions across the Middle East, the U.S. record is one of mayhem, instability and insecurity. In Iran, the coup crushed a democratic movement, consolidated authoritarian rule and laid the foundations for the deep anti-American sentiment that still shapes the relationship today. Across the region, repeated U.S. efforts to remove governments and engineer political outcomes have devastated states, empowered armed groups, displaced millions and produced consequences Washington neither anticipated nor could control.

The central lesson should be clear: destroying a government is far easier than controlling what follows. Yet Washington has repeatedly confused military power with political control and regime removal with victory. Seven decades later, the same assumptions persist: that the United States can impose its preferred order from outside, that societies will respond as Washington expects, and that the consequences can be contained. The tactics may change, but the mistake remains the same.

Trump’s “Economic D-Day” against Iran is from the same old playbook. It may deepen Iran’s economic pain but is unlikely to force a policy change.

Tehran views this war as an existential threat and is playing the long game, with a high tolerance for pain.
