Kerala economy is based mostly on remittances is an oft-repeated statement. However, the data differs. If you take a look at NSDP per-capita figures,

NSDP per-capita ->

Gujarat - ₹3,20,000
Maharashtra - ₹3,09,340
Kerala - ₹3,08,338

And NSDP is domestic production. It excludes remittances. Remittances are transfers. So Kerala economy, without adding any remittance, compares to Gujarat and Maharashtra on a per-capita basis.

That is why when you add remittances to it, the standard of living, or quality of life that you see in Kerala appears much higher than what the NSDP per capital ranking shows.

Better way to put is Kerala economy is more service based than manufacturing based. Not remittance based. Remittance adds another 20-30% to this.

Unfortunately we don't have a reliable household disposable income index or a Gross State Disposable Income for our states. You could see the clear jump then.
