PARTNERS IN BUILDING A JUST, PEACEFUL AND PROSPEROUS NIGERIA

Mr. President,

1. Greetings: I bring you warm greetings and prayers from all the members of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria. I am Archbishop Matthew Man-Oso Ndagoso, the Archbishop of Kaduna and the newly elected President of our Conference. I thank you immensely for granting us this audience, which offers us the opportunity to share with you some of our observations and genuine concerns about our country. This ensures the continuity of our collaborative engagement in the task of building a healthy nation that all of us would be proud to belong to: “a nation of justice, love and peace.”

2. The Visit of Archbishop Gallagher: Your Excellency, may we use this opportunity to express our gratitude to you and the Ministry of External Affairs for the warm reception that you gave to the Holy See’s Secretary for Relations with States and International Organisations, Archbishop Paul Gallagher, during his recent visit on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of Diplomatic Relations between the Holy See and the Federal Republic of Nigeria. We, as Nigerians and Catholics, are happy to share the two identities and proud of the healthy and unbroken relations between the two states. We believe that the relations will bear perceptible fruits for Christianity and Christians in our country. This, Mr. President, is a time when many Christians have legitimate concerns about their place in Nigeria, especially regarding the departure from the Christian/Muslim presidency, and we hope that, through deliberate government policies, those concerns will be addressed and Christians will be reassured of their rights as citizens. We expect that you will take steps to soothe frayed nerves and address the concerns.

3. Quality tertiary education and the challenge of limited spaces: Mr. President, Sir, you have shown a commitment to giving hope and succour to our youth through NELFund, the Student Loan Initiative. This deserves commendation. Unfortunately, by global standards, Nigeria does not as yet have enough universities to cater for a bulging youth population. Only a tiny fraction of the persons seeking admission into the university actually get it, owing to limited number of places available. We therefore hope that the recent moratorium placed by the National Universities Commission (NUC) on the establishment of new private universities does not cancel out the gains of NELFund.

4. Sustaining the gains of the democratic experience: Mr. President, on matters of the state, we are genuinely concerned by fears expressed across the country on the fate of opposition politics. You have a track record of having been in active opposition. Many voices are screaming over what they consider to be the constriction of the political space, with some fearing that a one-party state is being anticipated. Whether these fears are genuine or not, can only be tested by the signals citizens receive from Your Excellency as the leader of the party in power. To this end, we urge you to encourage elected political office holders who are members of your party – Governors, members of the National Assembly, Local Government Chairmen – to ensure that a genuine level playing field is maintained and that focus is placed on making everyone see that the rules and processes are fair to all and respected by all. As a man who risked so much in the struggle for the return of democratic rule in the dark days of military dictatorship, your greatest legacy would be the strengthening of our democratic institutions.

Learned Silk, with the greatest respect, I do not think you can entirely absolve yourself of the events that culminated in the last NBA election.

You led a team of lawyers to the Oyo State High Court, Ibadan, in a suit that sought orders capable of disrupting the electoral process and effectively denying thousands of lawyers the opportunity to freely exercise their constitutional right to choose from all qualified candidates. The Court of Appeal has since spoken unequivocally on that litigation, holding that the High Court lacked jurisdiction and describing the resort to that court as forum shopping. That judgment should equally form part of this conversation on the rule of law and due process.

It is also noteworthy that you describe universal suffrage as the “so-called” universal suffrage. That does not come as a surprise to many of us because, for years, there has been a widely held perception that some within the Egbe Amofin movement have been uncomfortable with the one-lawyer-one-vote system that has democratized the NBA. Universal suffrage may not be perfect, but it has given every lawyer, regardless of status, geography or affiliation, an equal voice in determining the leadership of our Association. That is a democratic gain worth preserving.

Learned Silk, where was this righteous indignation when the presidential candidate you openly supported proposed, less than 48 hours before the election, that the ECNBA should abandon the approved dual email-and-SMS OTP authentication system and adopt an SMS-only OTP process? When significant challenges arose with SMS OTP delivery on Election Day, the responsibility was placed everywhere except on those who advocated the change.

No electoral process is perfect, and the 2026 election undoubtedly experienced challenges. However, if we genuinely seek accountability, it cannot be selective. Those who championed proposals that materially affected the conduct of the election must also accept responsibility for the consequences of those proposals.

We can all agree that the NBA must continue to improve its electoral processes. But those reforms should be pursued through constitutional means, evidence-based proposals, and respect for democratic choice, not by attempting to disenfranchise lawyers through litigation, undermining universal suffrage, or advancing last-minute changes that create avoidable difficulties.

I’m your very little son in the legal profession, I may not know so much but these concerns above trouble me as I read your post, Learned Silk.

Today, I stand before you with a heart filled with profound gratitude and a deep sense of responsibility.

I am truly humbled by the confidence that members of the Nigerian Bar Association have reposed in me by electing me to serve as your President.

Thank you for believing in our shared vision of A BOLDER BAR THAT WORKS FOR EVERYONE. This victory is not mine alone; it belongs to every member who believed that our Association can be stronger, more inclusive, more responsive, and better positioned to serve the interests of all lawyers.

Over the past months, I had the privilege of travelling across our nation, engaging with colleagues in every state of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory. I listened to your hopes, your concerns, your aspirations, and your ideas. Those conversations shaped this campaign, and they will continue to guide my leadership.

I extend my sincere appreciation to every member who participated in this election, regardless of the candidate you supported. The election is over. We are one Bar, united by a common commitment to the advancement of our profession and the defence of justice and the rule of law.

I congratulate my fellow contestants for their commitment to our Association and for enriching this democratic process. I look forward to working with all of you as partners in building an NBA that reflects the very best of our profession.

To the BBOLD Campaign Council, our volunteers, coordinators, supporters, friends, colleagues, and every person who worked tirelessly, often behind the scenes, I cannot thank you enough. Your dedication, sacrifice, belief, and hard work made this journey possible. I am deeply grateful.

To my husband, thank you for your love, your sacrifices, your encouragement, and your unwavering belief in me throughout this journey. Your support, strength, and quiet confidence have meant more than words can express. I am deeply grateful to have walked this path with you by my side. Thank you for being my steadfast partner through it all.

To my family, mentors, friends, and everyone who stood by me with their prayers, encouragement, and unwavering support, thank you for walking this journey with me.

Today marks not the end of a campaign, but the beginning of a new responsibility.

BREAKING: DSS RELEASES NBA ELECTION SERVICE PROVIDER AS NEC AFFIRMS JULY 18 POLL

The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has unequivocally resolved that the 2026 NBA National Officers and General Council of the Bar (GCB) Elections will proceed as scheduled on Saturday, 18 July 2026, despite recent developments surrounding the Association’s Election Service Provider.

The resolution was reached at NEC’s Virtual Emergency Meeting held on Thursday, 16 July 2026, where members unanimously reaffirmed the Association’s commitment to constitutional governance, institutional independence, and the preservation of its democratic processes.

During the meeting, the Electoral Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (ECNBA) briefed the Council on the state of preparations for the elections and unequivocally affirmed its readiness to conduct a free, fair, transparent and credible poll on Saturday, 18 July 2026. The Committee informed NEC that there was no operational or logistical basis for postponing the elections, as all necessary arrangements remained firmly on course.

NEC emphasized that no external interference or unforeseen circumstance would derail the electoral timetable approved by the Association, stressing that the credibility and integrity of the NBA’s democratic institutions must be protected at all times.

The Council also strongly condemned the arrest and detention of the Managing Director of the NBA’s Election Service Provider by the Department of State Services (DSS), describing the development as deeply troubling. NEC consequently demanded his immediate and unconditional release, insisting that no action should be permitted to undermine the conduct of a free, fair, transparent, and credible election.

Shortly after the emergency meeting, it has been confirmed that the Managing Director had been released from custody. With these developments, the election scheduled for Saturday 18th July, 2026 remains uninterrupted.

Reaffirming the Association’s longstanding commitment to the rule of law, NEC called on all eligible members of the Bar to remain calm, participate peacefully in the elections, and continue to uphold the ideals of democracy and the independence of the legal profession.

The Council maintained that the 2026 NBA National Elections will hold as scheduled on Saturday, 18 July 2026, while urging all relevant authorities to respect the autonomy of the Association and refrain from any action capable of interfering with its democratic processes.
