"Assuming there's no complications carrying forward with the #NHL, Mike Babcock will be the next coach of the @EdmontonOilers. It's inevitable."
-@Bob_Stauffer on @OilersNow this afternoon
Sources: The Edmtn Oilers are consulting with the NHLPA to see if there are objections that must be resolved before potentially hiring Mike Babcock. Amid allegations of invading players privacy, Babcock resigned in CBJ as Head Coach in 2023. Further investigation may be required.
With all the speculation over Dylan Larkin's potential landing spot, you have to wonder about the Vegas Golden Knights being a destination he'd want to go. Larkin is good friends with Jack Eichel. Can VGK pull this off after the Cup Final?
Is what Vegas doing with Bruce Cassidy legal? Yes.
Is there anything written where they need to let him pursue other opportunities willingly? No.
Do they benefit from others when they ask for permission? Yes.
Should coaches be paying attention to this? Yes.
Is it petty? YES.
If he was still working for them, fine. But keeping him from working because it is a division rival? Vegas is ruthless but this seems like a bridge too far. You had him coach the whole year only to fire him with 8 games before the playoffs, but don't want him to work. Petty.
League sources say #Oilers have sought permission to interview Bruce Cassidy as they contemplate significant coaching staff changes.
To this point, sources say @GoldenKnights have withheld permission from division rival.
Gamesmanship? Perhaps. Mostly unprecedented for role.

Big fan of the new CFL playoff format starting in 2027. There will be more playoff games.
Top two teams in each division will play and winner moves to 3rd round. Loser plays in second round.
And play in games with seeds 5 v. 8 and 6. v. 7. Winners move to 2nd round to play the losers of 1/2 matchup.
Also season will start in late May and end November 7th.
Next year, I don't want to hear a peep about this type of stuff. They said it all year when they couldn't win 3 games in a row. They developed zero consistency through an 82 game schedule and said, don't worry, we know how to play when it matters. Clearly not. #LetsGoOilers
"It's seven games & first to four. We have experience in these situations. We have to go back home, win a game & go from there."
The #Oilers look to stay alive in Game 5 against the Ducks tonight at @RogersPlace. https://t.co/o61ICDVKA8
@tparchewsky That is my biggest worry too. The cupboards are pretty bare and McDavid has only committed for 2 more years. I hope I'm wrong, but if they don't figure it out over the next 12 months, it is likely curtains for this group.
I thought it before the playoffs started. I hated to say it because with Florida out this year, you just never know how the playoffs will go. But, maybe this is the year they regroup, get a summer off and start fresh in September. And find a way to get rid of some problems...
Prove it. They have said these things all year and have yet to show that they can do it this year. 2024 and 2025 were different teams. They have earned nothing to this point and shouldn't act like they have or just assume they can do it. Figure it out tonight or it is curtains.
"It feels like when our backs are up against the wall, that's when we kind of shine."
The #Oilers look to even up their first-round series with the Ducks in Game 4 at Honda Center tonight. https://t.co/B737nTtCuN
