Call me old fashioned, but I think it is important for students to learn how to read and follow a whole book, to be able to make sense of a fairly complex story & to extract from that experience something important to a fully realized life.
I'm stunned that so few of my confreres see the existential crisis of just giving up on this noble endeavor.
I know that Chat can "process" a novel with a simple text paste, just like I know that my calculator can help me average my students' grades. I know that Chat can find citations and generate outlines and generate "copy" for an essay in a variety of "personas" and skill levels. That is not why we are doing this.
Do we need a refresher on why we aspire to offer a "humane" education rather than an algorithmic program?
Do we know what we are just letting happen? Do we know that silence gives consent? We adults are consenting to the obliteration of our children, clearing space for the techlords to further control and dominate. Is this what we want?
