The decentralized #NHL Draft should go the way of New Coke, to the ash heap of history. Bringing back the old format is necessary. In fact, the idea of week-long festivities that include the NHL awards, the draft, and the beginning of free agency would be the way to go.
This would be true if the purpose of reading was purely utilitarian. No one is looking at maps for anything other than information; people read for a wide variety of purposes, many of which are contingent on the idea that original thought is involved.
Fun fact:
The broadcast starts with an audio clip of Foster Hewitt saying "Hello Canada, and hockey fans in the United States and Newfoundland," because the show has been on so long that when it started, Newfoundland wasn't part of Canada yet.
Stories of HNIC's importance to family gatherings on Saturday nights are very familiar to me. Now, they're mostly from the past. Now, Canadians watch hockey 7 days a week, once a pipe dream. If more is better, less of a genuine tradition may not be.
