The boys or the mom, who's more wrong here?

A server tells the story. A group of 13-year-old boys ran out on a $300-plus tab, one left his phone behind, and his mom came in to get it. Per the server, her take was "they're 13, let them have some fun." Then she called the police because the restaurant was holding the phone, and the cop told her she'd pretty much called the cops on herself.

The boys don't bother me as much as the mom does. Thirteen-year-olds do dumb stuff in groups. That's why God made parents.

That was her moment. Walk in, pay the bill, tip the server double, and march your son back in to apologize to her face. That's the whole lesson, and it would have been cheap at $300.

She did the opposite. She taught him that when you get caught, mom shows up, gets loud and makes it somebody else's fault. And then, per the server, she paid the tab and refused to tip. Of course she did.

I'm raising two boys. If either one ever pulls this, the phone stays at the restaurant until he walks in and owns it. Then he's working off every dollar of that tab at home.

Kids test the rules. Parents are supposed to be the rule.
