Los niños de los 80 crecieron con un concepto de "cine de terror para ver en familia" para películas como "House: Una casa alucinante" (House, 1985). De hecho, es uno de los mejores ejemplos y parte de muchas infancias.

El guion original de Fred Dekker era de terror psicológico, oscuro y sin humor. Fue el guionista Ethan Wiley quien, al reescribirlo, añadió todos los elementos de comedia y suavizando el tono.

El equipo de de efectos especiales tardó tres meses en construir todas las criaturas animatrónicas y monstruos de la casa, como la bruja obesa, el demonio del armario, el pez espada que cobra vida o el veterano de guerra zombi llamado Bg Ben e interpretado por Richard Moll, "Bull" Shannon en la serie "Juzgado de guardia" (Night Court, 1984-92).
