NEW ARTICLE: DANDELION and CANCER - Recent Research on Taraxacum Officinale since 2020 - 8 studies reviewed

There has been an explosion of research activity in the past few years into Dandelion and Cancer.

I review 8 key studies although there are two dozen in the past 4 years.

Taraxacum officinale, commonly named dandelion, is an edible plant - name derived from Greek “taraxis” for inflammation and “akeomai” for curative

Common name for dandelion is an alteration of “dent de lion”, a phrase thought to be based on the Welsh “Dant y Llew” of the thirteenth century, meaning “tooth of the lion”.

Botanists consider that dandelion originated in Greece, or perhaps the Northern Himalayas, and spread across temperate areas to Europe and Asia Minor

Earliest recorded observation of dandelion in North America was in the New England area in 1672

The plant is assumed to have spread to the west coast with loggers and settlers. The first Canadian collection of dandelion was made in Montréal, QC, in 1821

Dandelion’s bioactive compounds:

flower - carotenoids, flavonoids (luteolin, quercetin, rutin) (higher concentration of flavonoids)

leaves - carotenoids, coumarins, flavonoids, phenolic acids, polysaccharides (higher concentration of polyphenols), sterols

root - phenolic acids (caffeic acid), polysaccharides (inulin), sesquiterpene glucosides, triterpenes, sterols

also Vitamins and minerals, beta carotene, Vitamins C, D, B-complex, iron magnesium, zinc, manganese, copper

Dandelion Root Extract has the most focus and most anti-cancer studies. This is because it has more anti-cancer bioactive compounds which are not present in rest of the plant, specifically sesquiterpene glucosides, triterpenes, and sterols (specific anti-cancer compounds identified include taraxasterol and beta-sitosterol)

There is some overlap. Both Dandelion Root and Dandelion Leaf have polysaccharides, phenolic acids such as caffeic acid (anti-tumor), chlorogenic acid (anti-oxidant) and sterols, although they may have different types.

Anti-Cancer Mechanisms of Action:

- antioxidant (geno-protective)
- Induce apoptosis
- Inhibit proliferation by inhibiting PI3K/mTOR pathway
- Inhibit metastasis (by inhibiting matrix metalloproteinases)
- inhibits epithelial mesenchymal transition (EMT) (inhibit invasion)
- Inhibit Cancer Stem Cells (important)
- Inhibit angiogenesis
- Inhibit M2 macrophage polarization (pro-cancer macrophage) (very important)
- Induce differentation of cancer cells
- Improve T cell function
- Colorectal cancer - Dandelion root (taraxasterol) inhibits LPS mediated TLR4/NF-kB signaling

Cancers that could benefit from Dandelion:

Breast cancer (including Triple Negative Breast Cancer - common cancer in those who had COVID-19 mRNA Vaccines and developed Turbo Cancer)
Prostate Cancer (in vivo mouse study showed dramatic reduction of tumor size & volume - 2019 Nguyen et al)
Colorectal Cancer (in vivo mouse study - 2016 Ovadje et al)
leukemia, multiple myeloma (blood cancers)
melanoma
esophageal (in vivo), gastric
lung cancer
cervical cancer

CONCLUSION:

Dandelion is a fascinating plant with dozens of anti-cancer compounds and new ones being discovered all the time

Both Dandelion Leaf and Dandelion Root show anti-cancer effects with different sets of bioactive compounds.

If you have to choose one, Dandelion Root Extract is the one with more anti-cancer bioactive compounds, many of which are not found in the rest of the plant.

This is an exciting area of research and many new studies have literally just been published in the past few weeks and months.

No human studies yet, but there is a rush to figure out which compounds are the most powerful anti-cancer agents (they'll end up as an expensive big pharma drug one day)
