How come AI is treated as inevitable and something we must adapt to and accept, but renewable energy technology, sustainable infrastructure and electric cars aren’t treated with the same urgency or certainty?
Equitable grading = grade inflation = higher graduation rates.
But it also means students are years behind in reading and math while the graduation rates says they’re doing just fine.
“Kids nowadays don’t know any practical skills.”
Someone from the generation that decided to remove woodshop, auto shop, home economics, and personal finance from public school curriculums in exchange for more practical tests.
You want to fix education?
Teach kids how to fail and try again. Resilience is not built by removing every obstacle. It is built by hitting the wall and figuring out what comes next.
You want to fix education?
Stop socially promoting kids. Passing a child who cannot do the work does not help him. It just moves the problem to the next teacher and makes it bigger.
I gave students an open-notes midterm; the only requirement was that the notes had to be handwritten. Students tried to sneak typed notes and printed lectures into the exam. It doesn't matter if you try to help; students are going to cheat.
Students need to learn how to sit, think, and write for extended periods.
No phones. No computer.
Just their thoughts, the struggle to organize them, and the clarity that comes from deep focus.
You want to fix education?
Stop buying curriculum from companies that repackage the same junk every seven years. Ask the teachers in the room what actually works for the students in front of them.
In my teaching experience…
Teachers who never question administrators’ decisions often get labeled as “good teachers.”
Teachers who do ask questions often get labeled as “difficult.”
Have you seen this too?
I cannot believe there are professors and Ph.D.'s who OPENLY proclaim that they, and others in their field, routinely cite articles and books without having actually read them. Like, what the absolute eff is going on?
