This Jackass lacked the outlandish, startling invention and uncontrollable laughter of previous outings. But the most striking moments involving Knoxville getting emotional about this being the Jackass valediction. It also underscored the fact that everybody gets old
JACKASS BEST & LAST: Although there are still pleasures at seeing the old gang & some chuckles, it’s my sad duty as a Jackass fan report this is the weakest/laziest - mostly a highlights reel. It does serve as a Caught By the Tides for Jackass reflecting on the ravages of time
I would interested in hearing from genuine Obsession admirers to hear what it is that captures the zeitgeist or resonated with them. I fully realize I’m probably the wrong demographic just by my age. However, I’ve had my share of real life obsessive relationships
DISCLOSURE DAY: round 3 at an AMC XL screen lent the images/lighting extra clarity. I remain convinced that that this is really a raw personal movie dressed up as a summer popcorn movie. The propulsive mechanical contrivances are just there to get to the messy emotional trauma
BICYCLE THIEVES: remains perhaps the most famous example of Italian neorealist humanism. Though I still prefer DeSica’s Shoeshine, this is a beautiful portrait of both post war Italy and a family. Performances are excellent & the location photography has lyrical clarity.
Still, I’m happy to see that people still get excited about movies enough to tell their friends they should see something. My screening was reasonably full for a movie a several weeks into its release. I just don’t understand why this particular movie is hitting that note
Navarrette deserves a lot of credit for committing to the premise, but the movie ultimately makes her a cartoonishly crazy gf. It might have been more interesting to see the movie from her perspective
OBSESSION: a decent premise with a good cast & the filmmaking has economical efficiency. But it doesn’t go anywhere particularly original or interesting & doesn’t illuminate anything about obsession. I guess I don’t really get why this resonates so deeply with so many people now
TOY STORY 5: a huge improvement from the anticlimactic, unnecessary dud that was 4. While not on the exceptional level of 1-3, this is a good story well told with inventive, adroit animation & the new characters are involving. Surprisingly satisfying.
It was also nice to watch it with a packed house with an appreciative audience. I wonder if it won’t resonate with younger generations. And if you never liked Spielberg or are turned off by his sensibility, this will certainly not work for you
Blunt does her career best work & really deserves a lot of credit. But the entire cast really works overtime to convey the themes of empathy/manipulation in a n intuitive way
DISCLOSURE DAY: round 2 70mm. Once again profoundly moved in sometimes inexplicable ways & still vibrating w/thoughts/feelings/images. Feels like Spielberg deconstructing/exercising his virtuosic ability to manipulate using pop forms but also reflecting on global changes
JINSEI: went into this blind & didn’t expect it to be so imaginative/audacious/moving. Makes expressive use of static montages & covers everything from childhood trauma to adult ennui to finding solace through pop & surprisingly morphs into dystopian sci-fi & abstract parable
It’s true that tonally/thematically, it is closest to both Minority Report and Fabelmans. Plot structure, it might owe a bit to the Post - but it outstrips that movie by several magnitudes
