**Government of Karnataka Announces Prohibition of Sale & Services of Hookah to Protect Public Health**

Bengaluru, Karnataka – [Insert Date], 2024 – In a landmark move aimed at safeguarding the health of its citizens, the Government of Karnataka has announced the prohibition of the use, sale, and service of Hookah in all public places, including hotels, restaurants, pubs, bars, lounges, cafes, clubs, and other recreational establishments.

This decisive action is underpinned by alarming data from the WHO Global Adult Tobacco Survey-2016-17 (GATS-2), which reveals that 22.8% of adults in Karnataka use tobacco, with 8.8% identified as smokers. Notably, exposure to secondhand smoke in public places stands at 23.9%, while the mean age for initiating tobacco use is approximately 19 years.

The increasing popularity of Hookah smoking, particularly among the youth, has raised significant health concerns. Studies have demonstrated that the smoke from Hookah, which contains carbon monoxide, metals, and carcinogens, poses serious health risks. These include various forms of cancer, reduced lung function, and cardiovascular disease, mirroring the dangers associated with cigarette smoking.

Moreover, Hookah bars, often found in close proximity to educational institutions, operate without adherence to existing legal provisions, including the COTPA 2003, Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, and several other pertinent regulations.

The Government of Karnataka's prohibition aligns with the actions of ten other Indian states that have already banned Hookah bars. This measure is a reflection of the state's commitment to promoting public health and curbing harmful practices.

The prohibition is grounded in extensive research indicating that even one Hookah session can be as harmful as smoking 100 cigarettes. The resulting secondhand smoke presents a lethal cocktail of chemicals, endangering both smokers and non-smokers alike.

In light of the evidence and the potential health risks, the Government of Karnataka is taking a firm stance against Hookah smoking. This initiative serves as a critical step in protecting the health and well-being of all citizens and reinforcing the importance of public health directives.
