#hoyausten pockets of money in Austen novels are in the spotlight, and these affluent families are portrayed as the only people that exist in society. Those who live among these families aren’t acknowledged at all.
#hoyausten dichotomy between city and village: your ability to form cultural opinions hinges on your upbringing and background. This dichotomy is false/unfair because the country is complex (hardships, close neighbors). In addition, Austen is ignoring the poorer population.
#hoyausten Edmund’s property fixer upper challenges- will gradually happen anyways, extremely expensive, doesn’t love Henry’s vision to begin with, and not very relevant to his duty in the future.
#hoyausten loving the diction and imagery in Edmund’s quote: “she does not think evil but she speaks it- speaks it in playfulness- and though I know it to my playfulness it grieves me to the soul.” 184
#hoyausten wouldn’t be surprised if miss Crawford wasn’t kidding that she wouldn’t dance with Edmund ever again since she doesn’t “dance with clergyman.” Dance a metaphor for get involved with in general?
#hoyausten yikes Edmund (p 136), that’s a harsh comment... “[miss crawford] certainly understands YOU better than you are understood by the greater part of those who have know you so long.” Fanny already doesn’t really like her, this feels like a slap in the face! :(
#hoyausten is the half a note Fanny is excited about that Edmund left her before she walked in and spoke to him similar to that of a letter significance? She’s lamenting it could be the only one she ever gets from him- similar to Marianne and willoughby in s&s?
#hoyausten wow Henry is so classy! Needs to “make a small hole in Fanny prices heart.” Yikes. As if two sisters wasn’t enough for you... and no intention of anything serious.
#hoyausten yikes- miss Crawford saying she won’t respect Edward much if he doesn’t have lots of money.. she has a “much greater respect for those that are honest and rich.” (147)
