We are not children — we deserve some actual clarity.

ASIO and PM have a duty to explain their odd statements made yesterday:

▪️ASIO saying it “suspects” the IRGC.

▪️ASIO saying attacks are “linked” to the IRGC.

▪️ASIO saying that it is “likely” IRGC directed other attacks.

▪️ASIO’s qualified statements all made without production of any evidence.

▪️ASIO stating the case was developed in liaison with “foreign powers”, but not identifying even the country involved.

▪️ASIO saying the Iranian Ambassador expelled despite admitting the diplomats were “not involved”. 

▪️PM saying ASIO had “credible intelligence”, rather than using the word “proof”.

▪️PM saying IRGC “has form” is not proof.

▪️PM saying ASIO identified “one individual” as the intermediary between IRGC network and the criminal gangs in Australia. There’s a lot resting on that one individual.

▪️Finally, PM last night gave a qualified endorsement of ASIO’s chief: “That is the advice that ASIO have given us, and given the quality and the detail of the advice that we received, the Director-General Burgess' comments are, I believe, accurate.”

Australia deserves much more than this if trust is to be retained.

All will recall the history of our security agencies getting it wrong — most notoriously causing Australia to send its military to invade Iraq on fake evidence of weapons of mass destruction.

Why Hamas is NOT a terrorist group

The framework of international law:

The United Nations (UN) has never declared Hamas a terrorist group. Only certain countries are doing this (USA, EU, Canada and some others), but not international law.

Why? Because Israel is recognized as an occupying power: since 1967 it has occupied Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem by military force. According to International Humanitarian Law, peoples under occupation have the legitimate right to resist, even with weapons, against the occupier.

This is supported by:

- UN resolutions, which recognize the right of all peoples to fight against colonial and foreign occupation.

- Geneva Conventions and the practice of the International Criminal Court (CPI), which do not criminalize armed resistance, provided that the laws of war are respected.

In this frame, Hamas is a political and resistance actor, not a terrorist group.

Judith Butler (American philosopher, Berkeley University): affirmed that “armed resistance under occupation cannot be reduced to terrorism,” and that the debate must include the roots of violence: occupation and colonialism.

Hamas could be criticized for certain acts, but that does not nullify its political legitimacy nor its character as a liberation movement.

Israel has imposed the label of "terrorism" as a propaganda tool to:

1) Prevent the world from talking about occupation and apartheid.

2) Justify massive bombing of civilian population in Gaza.

3) Criminalize any form of Palestinian resistance, whether armed or even peaceful (NGOs, students, journalists).

Calling Hamas a “terrorist” is not a legal fact, it’s a political and media strategy.

Israel, on the other hand, has murdered resistance leaders without trial, demonstrating its contempt for international law.

Palestinian resistance groups are comparable to other anti-colonial movements in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Hamas is a Palestinian actor with real representation in society, as it won elections in 2006.

The UN has never declared Hamas a terrorist. Israel is an occupying power. And according to international law, resistance against occupation is legitimate. That is not terrorism, it is a people's right to liberate themselves.

Politics rarely leads.

The most important social and political change has, and by design must, always come from the people.

Unfortunately, it takes too long, as politics resists, media condemns.

As history shows, everyone has something to protect, a reason not to be brave.

Sometimes, it happens faster, because something triggers the masses. A threshold is reached. People can’t stand anymore.

They take to the streets, risk themselves, choose what is right over what is safe, the zeitgeist shifts, and politics responds.

There were extensive anti-apartheid protests in Australia over 40 years, for example, spanning from the late 1940’s through the 1980’s.

The 1971 South African Springbok rugby union tour of Australia sparked widespread protests across the country.

Activists disrupted matches, blocked team movements and led marches, resulting in arrests, a state of emergency in Queensland, and the cancellation of a planned cricket tour.

Eventually, Australia applied sanctions and in some ways, led. Today, we are immensely proud of the role we played.

The patterns are not new. They just repeat.

Those Australians carried a fierce love, the kind that doesn’t back down, the kind humanity most needs.

Standing against genocide, apartheid, illegal occupation, the deliberate starvation of children and for all innocent people is never wrong.

Doesn’t matter where it is.

It is confronting, yes, irrespective of the media framing or power dynamics of today, Australia will take immense pride that 300,000+ people chose to confront mass injustice, protect innocent children, support international law, commit to shared humanity and demand a just peace.

Unfortunately, it’s not enough.

It’ll take many more.

The children of Gaza will need you, too.
