Former Human Rights Watch executive director (1993-2022). Now senior fellow, Yale University (Law and Jackson). My book: "Righting Wrongs" (Knopf/Allen Lane).
This isn't the first time the US government stood on the wrong side of an essential human rights challenge. In my new book, "Righting Wrongs," I explain how the human rights movement repeatedly circumvented and overcame US obstruction. We can do it again. https://t.co/Q3acXNsqH7
As Trump openly sides with Putin's dictatorship against Ukraine's democracy, he has the audacity to question the loyalty to the United States of Democratic nominee for Senate from Michigan, Dr Abdul El-Sayed. Loyalty to the US as a dictatorship like Trump? https://t.co/wWyalXne2l
So much for helping the working class: Trump's tariffs have pushed up the cost of consumer goods by ~2%, or an average of $1,100 this year per household. His war of choice with Iran will add another $1,000 to the average household’s costs by year’s end. https://t.co/dfG77T9eCF
Trump’s policies will cost the poorest tenth of American households, with average income after taxes and transfers of some $37,000, almost 3% of their income, while the richest tenth, with average after-tax incomes of nearly $500,000, will gain nearly 3%. https://t.co/YITy1WgmT3
The best way to counter Trump's efforts to undermine voter confidence in the integrity of the midterm elections is to vote. I did today. https://t.co/GageVfH6rb
A big blow to autocracy -- Serbia’s Vučić concedes defeat after tense parliamentary elections. The Serbian leader lost in a landslide to a protest-backed student movement. https://t.co/8uEiGfYHcW
While Trump cut taxes for the rich, he tightened access to food stamps—with more than 5 million Americans losing benefits so far—and to Medicaid, the health-care program for the poor. https://t.co/ezJ4MDtbSA
"If current trends continue, the Chinese state will find itself exposed to a political succession crisis, a weakening economy, and a lack of resources to exercise power domestically and project it externally" -- "a perfect storm." https://t.co/a9puMcJ7n8
The Israeli opposition to Netanyahu may be making the classic mistake of others who oppose the far right -- trying to emulate or outflank it ends up legitimizing it. The far right is always better at coming up with outlandish policies than imposters. https://t.co/L2fsuzfXLs
The biggest impediment to replacing the genocidal Netanyahu as Israeli leader may be the opposition's refusal to build a coalition with Israeli-Arab political parties. https://t.co/zn3536AEn8
"Brazil, Israel, Serbia and the US are holding elections within the space of 10 days. Will the authoritarian right cement its global gains, or can pro-democracy forces make a comeback?" https://t.co/6VH1La92qK
The Trump administration is handpicking the Venezuelan opposition leader to negotiate with the remnants of the Maduro dictatorship, which is now backed by Trump in return for handing over Venezuela's oil. https://t.co/fxTLfQ6qpK
The Trump administration's new restrictions have pushed 13% of Americans off the rolls of people entitled to receive food stamps as a tool against hunger. https://t.co/oMDGaHOkKH
Someone who lies to cover up her country's role in aiding and abetting genocide (by sending arms and mercenaries to the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary in Sudan) should NEVER be UN secretary general. That's United Arab Emirates diplomat Lana Nusseibeh. https://t.co/zfvxCO1Htx
In July 2024, Lana Nusseibeh publicly and categorically rejected the UN Panel of Experts’ findings of credible evidence that #UAE supports the atrocities and genocide committed by the Rapid Support Forces (#RSF) militia in Sudan.
Confronted on CNN, she declared: “No. Those allegations are categorically untrue.” Asked directly whether she disputed the UN experts’ findings, she replied: “Yes, absolutely.”
Now, Ms. Nusseibeh seeks to lead the very institution whose findings she so emphatically dismissed in defence of her government. How can she possibly be entrusted with that responsibility? The fundamental question is not whether Nusseibeh was entitled to defend her regime. It is whether someone who placed that defence above the credible findings of UN experts can genuinely be entrusted with upholding the independence, integrity, and authority of the United Nations.
Why should the world trust her judgment when the UN’s findings conflict with the interests of the very government that nominated her? The UN highest office is not for protecting a criminal regime from scrutiny and accountability. The seat of the UN Secretary-General should not be for sale!
Russia's war-crime targeting of Ukraine's energy infrastructure is leaving Ukrainian civilians fearing the coldest winter since Putin's full-scale invasion. https://t.co/2BlpooGyCS
The Chinese government raises surprisingly little from personal taxes. Most income comes from (struggling) state-owned-enterprises and the sale of (diminishing quantities of) land. Does the government deliver enough to its people to raise taxes? Unclear. https://t.co/hKAZdqmGHk
The United Arab Emirates' deep investment in Manchester is part of its effort to deter the British government from acting on its suppression of all dissent at home and its sending of arms and mercenaries to the genocidal Rapid Support Forces in Sudan. https://t.co/X2ODh27EIY
As Israel prepares to go to the polls on Tuesday, the issue that has received shockingly little attention is Israel's having reduced much of Gaza to rubble and killed nearly 75,000 people. What genocide? https://t.co/MLZ9F6f0tX
Ukraine ordered the evacuation of families with children from the eastern cities of Sloviansk and Kramatorsk because of frequent Russian drone and glide bomb attacks. Many people have already left, but thousands remain. https://t.co/JVaajDEF2H
The son of Myanmar’s Aung San Suu Kyi has been allowed to speak to the detained former democratic leader for the first time in more than five years, highlighting the injustice of the Myanmar military junta's detention of her. https://t.co/vJbBZpk3SL
