Back at the bargaining table with my KUOW colleagues today! Fun fact: the cost of living in Seattle has gone up almost 20% since our last contract was signed. Minimum salaries for positions in our newsroom have gone up ... 0%.
We’re baaack!
The @KUOW newsroom’s lonnng fight for a living wage continues.
And we are as fired up as ever to get our wealthy employer to pay us enough to live in the city we cover. 🧵

Great idea! Your amazing staff totally agrees!
Now please tell your negotiating team to propose a living wage that enables your amazing #SAGAFTRA staff to keep living in Seattle.

Why is fall acting like summer? Check out my conversation with @RadioGirlMurphy on @KUOW.
And thanks to @claremcgrane for packaging it all together! https://t.co/rGGXckTn0g
@lizardengland Y axis guess: Mainstream popularity. Tetris, Minecraft and Tic-Tac-Toe are immensely widely known. The titles at the top of the Y axis are super niche Gamer's Games.
@evergreenstone@seattletimes OMG!! Congrats Scott, very excited to hear what you do with a whole new beat. And welcome (back) to the Public Media circus🙃 🙃
what is “art-house” audio, what is “brutalist” audio, what is “pop” audio, what is “neo-romantic” audio? Gimme more than reviews and host worship 🫠 gimme analysis. That’s more care than a top ten list.
@evergreenstone@marcarivers Have not seen Top Gun, do not want to see Top Gun, but now I'm having the urge to script a movie about Tom Cruise cyborgs replacing all men...
For people who have been studying the misinformation campaign around the Depp v Heard trial, this verdict is chilling. The success of Depp’s “redemption arc” narrative reveals a lot about our social media platforms and ourselves.
A thread of things I learned during Depp v Heard:
What a huge loss for the podcast + media world, and a reminder that even the best journalism isn't safe from market forces... Fingers crossed In The Dark is able to keep doing their work.

@evergreenstone Glad you are taking care of yourself! Thank you for being so open about how hard reporting on the world can be. My creative writing degree is thrilled to know it may, one day, also see some use.
I am a high-achieving WOC in academic medicine. I am almost 9 months postpartum. I had my annual physical with my PCP today. I confided that I felt everything was a bit dull/sad lately. I asked for advice on who I could talk to to feel more like myself. Here's what happened (🧵):
The massive apartment buildings (rent: $2500+) going up in the former Seattle Times parking lot (RIP) have Times headlines on each floor. If they use any of my stories’ headlines do you think they’ll give me free access to the pools/dog run/climbing wall/karaoke room?
Listen to today's Seattle Now to follow along with me and @RadioGirlMurphy as we get schooled on trail construction (and hike 2 miles in the rain with our microphones)
This story was so much fun (and a bit bittersweet) to make. Rattlesnake Ledge was one of my first hikes. I just found an old picture of me and my dad at the top, taken when I was ~ 8.

And after making this episode I will never look at a trail the same way! The amount of work that goes into making every hike safe, sustainable and gorgeous is stunning.
