Jensen Huang was asked whether he would rather be twenty today or twenty in his own era.
He chose his own, and the reason he gave explains why the hardest problems keep getting cracked by people who had no business cracking them.
Huang: “I think everyone deserves some time to be oblivious. And not to wear all of the world’s problems on their shoulder on day one.”
That is not nostalgia. He is describing a resource that used to come free with being young and now has to be actively protected.
Huang: “There’s a superpower in ignorance. Nvidia would not be possible today, if not for the fact that I was ignorant to the fact that it’s impossible to build Nvidia.”
He was not underinformed about semiconductors. He was one of the best informed people alive on that subject.
He was missing exactly one piece of information, and it happened to be the piece that would have stopped him.
That distinction is the entire mechanism.
Experience sharpens judgment. It also sharpens fear.
Expertise is a compressed record of what has already failed. The more accurate the record, the more of the map it marks as closed.
Which means the people most qualified to judge whether something is possible are, for that same reason, the least likely to attempt it.
A twenty year veteran will hand you fifty reasons your idea will not work, and most of them will be right.
Being right about why something cannot be done has never built a single thing worth remembering.
And impossible is almost never a physical claim. It is a statistical one. It means nobody has done it yet, under the narrow conditions anyone has bothered to test.
Experience quietly upgrades that into law.
The researcher who never read the proof of impossibility just runs the experiment. He keeps working long after everyone informed has stopped.
Occasionally the thing that was supposed to be immovable just moves.
A twenty year old today can discover in ninety seconds that his idea has been tried and buried eleven times.
He has more expert opinion, more failure analysis, and more reasons to quit before starting than any human who has ever lived.
That access was supposed to be power.
Discouragement has no friction left. It arrives before the first attempt instead of after the tenth.
That is the weight on the shoulder he is talking about. The damage is in the timing, not the volume.
None of this makes ignorance a strategy. Most people who don’t know the odds lose to them.
But the two outcomes are not the same size. Being wrong costs a few years. Never starting costs everything that would have existed.
Institutions get this backwards. They hire people who know why things fail, then wonder why nothing new comes out of the building.
A room full of experience is a room full of reasons.
The encouraging part is that the supply is renewable. Every year produces a fresh batch of people nobody has gotten to yet. The only variable is how quickly the rest of us reach them and hand them the list.
Every generation inherits a list of things that cannot be done, and almost nothing on it was ever tested. It was assumed, then repeated, then taught.
Somewhere right now, someone is months into a problem his entire field has already ruled out.
Every era gets moved by the person who didn’t find out in time.

Peter Thiel on what he doesn’t like about the Lean Startup
Thiel believes there are merits to the Lean Startup, but he thinks founders today may have over-indexed on it:
“I do think we tend to be dominated by a somewhat nihilistic bias where we claim not to know anything. And when you don’t know anything, you end up defaulting too much to the experimental search, A/B testing approach of ‘Let’s ask the customers.’ And I would say the problem with that is that the search space is simply way too big.”
In practice, Thiel argues for a more definite view of the future: “This is an important problem that needs to be solved, and this is the set of things we have to combine in just this way to do it.”
To be fair, Steve Blank—who pioneered the Lean Startup methodology—isn’t necessarily against this approach. Blank just recommends treating your assumptions as “a series of untested hypotheses.”
But there’s clearly a balance between having a definite view of the future and rigorously trying to disprove your assumptions.
As Thiel explains, many of the PayPal founding team’s initial assumptions were wrong:
“At PayPal, our original business plan was to have payments on Palm Pilots, then it was wireless payments, then it was payments linked to email. So we had a few fairly big pivots in the first year. I’m not sure there’s anything especially virtuous about that — if you have a dumb idea, it’s important to change it — but it’s not virtuous to have a really bad idea in the first place.”
