This evening, I paid a courtesy call on Senior Counsel and PLP Party Leader Hon. @MarthaKarua at her home to express my solidarity following her ordeal in Uganda earlier in the day.

There can be no meaningful East African Community if citizens performing their professional duties are harassed or barred from moving freely across the borders as permitted by the Treaty.

As counsel for political prisoners Dr Kizza Besigye and Hajji Obeid Lutale, @MarthaKarua has every right to access her client in Uganda.

We call on the government of Uganda to uphold the rule of law and respect binding treaties of the Jumuiya.

Kenyan Law Society President Charles Kanjama has condemned the deportation of Dr Kizza Besigye’s lead counsel Martha Karua from Uganda, describing the move as unexplained and a setback to regional integration efforts. He also criticised the detention of former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, calling it illegal and warning that such actions undermine the spirit of East African unity.

I am in Uganda as part of the defence team representing Kampala Mayor Erias Lukwago in the ongoing treason proceedings. Of particular concern is the decision by Ugandan Authorities to deny entry to Senior Counsel @MarthaKarua, who was travelling to Uganda for the same matter and in the same professional capacity.

The right to legal representation and the independence of counsel are fundamental to the administration of justice. It is difficult to understand why one member of a defence team should be admitted while another is turned away. We call upon the Ugandan authorities to provide an explanation for this action and to uphold the rule of law and regional cooperation that underpin the East African Law Society.
