It was her name, she was entitled to it.โ - @clay_ingel

@realMaalouf "A girl can be married off at nine. A female apostate? Executed. This isn't "extremism." It's legal orthodoxy in many Muslim-majority countries today - and it's being revived with force in Syria."

She aspired to be a doctor but was too squeamish about blood. She dreamed of becoming a lawyer but wanted to avoid tedious reading. So, she chose to become a writer.
In moments when words failed her, she sought solace in writing. During her high school years, she was somewhat of a rabble rouser. One time, the dean publicly humiliated her in front of the entire school.
Unable to respond in that moment, she channeled her anger into writing and created three pages of thoughts. She inadvertently shared her writing with a friend, who was caught reading it in class, giggling uncontrollably. Consequently, the piece was confiscated, and Ingel found herself in trouble. One particular line that enraged her dean was:
โNow heโs bringing his skinny self to class, wish I could tell him, โnigger kiss my ass.โโ
The dean was so furious that he suspended Ingel for thirty school days.
That was then...
Now, @clay_ingel employs her writing and spoken word talents to confront the injustices stemming from sexual and gender-based violence. Her voice has reached illustrious global leaders, including HE Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.
During COVID, Ingel became a mother and was unable to finish her degree, leaving her feeling adrift. She said to me, โI used to be bold, confident, and outspoken. Now, I feel shy, withdrawn, and alone.โ
A fellow Liberian poet, Korto Reeves, invited her to a two-week writing retreat. Aside from writing, Ingel is using this opportunity to rediscover herself.
When I asked Ingel what she has been uncovering about herself during this period, she shared:
โI am quiet and I am loud.
I raise my voice about the things that matter to me.
I speak up for the people who matter to me.
I have a sense of humor.
I make myself laugh.
I am rebellious.
I challenge 'no' and strive to turn it into 'yes.'
I am light.
I am a child of light.
I am a daughter of the land.
I am a daughter of the sun.
I embrace political controversy.
I am a writer.โ
I wrapped my arms around Ingel and wished her all the best. She is an extraordinary woman. She is rising from the ashes. Watch her roar!
