Initial Reactions from Top Shot's 2024-2025 Blog:
Top Shot Score
As someone who is one of the biggest losers of this decision (along with other large collectors from the early days), I think this is a great change and long overdue (with one somewhat significant gripe regarding the implementation):
โ A handful of users (myself included) had inflated Top Shot Scores due to a calculation quirk, which is not logical or fair
โ While I'm sure some will disagree, I think it's a big improvement for Top Shot Score to be able to decrease. TSS should be an approximation of today's value, otherwise odd dynamics emerge (example: some moments had much higher TSS based on ASP than market value, making them "attractive" purchases. Under the new system, those moments will eventually have TSS that roughly mirrors current value, so it's no longer logical to target them as "efficient" TSS purchases).
What I really really don't like:
Collectors were told many times that Top Shot Score will never decrease. As such, some users locked high-TSS moments (as long as 365 days), have been hesitant to sell moments that carried outsized Top Shot Scores and/or have been "saving" outlier TSS moments for a leaderboard contest with a reward they want to own. Those users (realistically, many of the largest collectors on the platform) are probably feeling blindsided by the sudden change.
A much better plan would have been to make an announcement that this change will take place on January 1, 2025 (for example) and run several TSS burn leaderboards between now. That way, these collectors have the opportunity to realize at least some of the value embedded in the moments with outsized TSS, even if not as much value as they thought they held.
Instead, the collectors who trusted Dapper and decided to be patient and hold moments based on implications and communications from Dapper that Top Shot Score carries real value and that the calculation is not changing are taking it on the chin as their Top Shot Score evaporates overnight.
While the original calculation was not perfect and a change was absolutely needed and will be beneficial to the platform, the implementation of the change left a lot to be desired (to say the least). There was a straightforward way to both revise the calculation to something more logical and allow those who will suffer most from the change to unlock some value from their (inflated) Top Shot Score before the change took effect. Whether or not you feel those users "deserve" value, the issue of not being able to take Dapper's word at face value is universally problematic and should be called out accordingly.
Personally, I feel relieved and lucky that I chose to use a handful of my larger outlier Top Shot Score moments on a few leaderboards. There are, unfortunately, many users (myself included) who held some or all of their high-TSS moments back with reasonable expectation (based on Dapper communications) that Top Shot Score would be a significant part of the platform and would never go down for an owned moment.
Overall, I think it's a positive and is a much much better and fairer system, but there was a way to make the change without leaving some of the largest collectors on the platform feeling completely blindsided by reversing course on explicit guidance.
Decisions like this undermine Dapper's credibility, which is a huge problem in an emerging space in which we are all heavily reliant on Dapper's guidance. Dapper has shown that they are willing to go back on their word, with no advance notice and no effort to remedy the situation for impacted users. I'm not sure how users can feel good about making buying / selling decisions when even the most direct and clear communications cannot be taken at face value or trusted.
Supernova
I am excited about the concept and look forward to the release of the actual moments. Top Shot's curation team does a great job.
My gripe here is the timing of this sort of release. We are now over four years into Top Shot and the collecting experience is almost identical to what it looked and felt like in September 2020, when I first join the platform.
In my view - fix and enhance the collecting experience as a priority. Only then introduce the headline-grabbing moments and think about gamification (it is most definitely not my preference to have Dapper-run gamification embedded into the Top Shot experience but Dapper seems set in its ways, as misguided as I think they are)
It is wild that:
๐ We still cannot custom-sort, organize, or curate our collections
๐ Physical display options are non-existent
๐ The most exciting announcements each year are focused on the latest iteration of mediocre casino games (that we all know are exactly as "popular" as the easy money that can be won from them) that are completely removed from the moments themselves (not a huge surprise)
๐ The target audience seems to be "people who like to capitalize on inefficient games + pack pricing" rather than "people who like sports + sports collectibles" which is baffling when you have a product that improves upon just about every shortfall of physical collectibles (particularly sports cards)
๐ No social media platform integrations
๐ The closest we get to any enhancements on the collector experience are periodic @bayusBrain threads (which are great...now let's see them come to life instead of the 100th Fast Break "improvement")
The same 25-50 collectors will end up owning these moments because every aspect of new user acquisition is focused on nonsense (respectfully) games, not sports / NBA / collectibles. So new users are far more focused on Fast Break prize pools than cool new moments.
At some point (seemingly soon...), Dapper will have exhausted its library of NBA content and, with it, its ability to mint marquee moments. I think it's critical to get the right collector experience in place BEFORE that happens.
I do not agree with the strategy of allocating significant dev resources and throwing free money around to attract users (who, inevitably, like free money, not sports collectibles) and then crossing your fingers (rather than actually building out an enhanced collecting experience) that these same users (the ones that came for the easy-money games) decide to invest in a novel sports collectible while they have a few minutes between setting Fast Break lineups. ๐คทโโ๏ธ
Overall, I think the announcements are positive and am excited for the new season. The blog can be found via @NBATopShot.
