Using Artificial Intelligence to Combat #ClimateChange: The Snake Biting Its Own Tail?

The above title is deliberately provocative. Not to discredit the potential benefits of #AI for the development of a more sustainable world, but simply to keep in mind the issues linking modern #MachineLearning, the environment, and global warming.

Indeed, AI itself can contribute to climate change and the deterioration of our natural and social environment through
👇
1/ its manufacture (extraction of minerals and rare resources such as lithium, cobalt or tantalum, which can lead to serious human and environmental costs, pollution and social tensions, in developing countries where the extraction sites for AI essential technologies resources are located),

2/ its use (enormous energy consumption and consequently high CO2 emissions),

and 3/ its end-of-life management (electronic waste, of which only a small quantity is properly recycled, leading to the pollution of our natural environment, soil and water, by toxic substances including mercury and also hydrochlorofluorocarbons which infiltrate the atmosphere and contribute to rising global temperatures).

But yes, AI is still a very powerful tool in the fight against climate change, if we use it responsibly! (as in fact in all the other areas where artificial intelligence can play a role!)

We now need to actively develop research to drastically reduce the environmental costs associated with AI design and use, and with data centers that consume ever-greater amounts of computing power.
The shift towards bigger and always bigger language models only accentuates the problem.
And let's start making AI affordable and accessible to all communities, not just the world's richest, if we don't want the snake to continue biting its own tail!
