@Strickomaster I worked hard for ‘strict’ teachers - however, looking back, it’s because they were fair, had boundaries, were interested in me as a person and more than anything showed they were human. I respected them as a person not as an authority
Always struggled staying focused when reading - being somewhere on the dyslexic spectrum, I would have to read the same page 10 times as I was daydreaming whilst reading ( to mu teacher’s dismay) - audio books and podcasts have changed my life - and of course made me sympathetic towards my student’s. Some of us read with our ears 😉
@Starbored3 @navi_lucy @johncosgrove405 Oh yes there is definitely that too - one scenario doesn’t cancel out the other - some humans struggle with communication and connection- be that a teacher or a child ❤️
As long as you listen without being defensive- ask the parent how they think you can help their child - explore reasons the behaviour could be happening- Be open, authentic and show vulnerability- ie: I need your help with this - obviously all this depends on how receptive the parents are - good luck 💚
Dear schools/ heads/ teachers
Please understand that children and adults often chew pens to help aid concentration and to self regulate.not to be defiant- and once they stop chewing because they have been told off’ they disengage, fidget and ‘mess’
This is not just an issue for neurodiversity - and shouldn’t need a statement!
And the next comment is about ink poisoning and mess!
You can get pen toppers that are chewable! ALLOW IT!
For those who already use this common sense approach- apologies
Some schools seem to be handing out detentions for this!
I thought we had come on a lot further than that!

Children were punished for not wearing blazers AND jumpers in 28° heat and needed the head's permission to take them off. This isn't about standards, expectations or behaviour; punishments do not foster a sense of belonging.
My blog on this nonsense: https://t.co/U9OuZDwdYn
Can someone explain to me how giving a child in year 7 ( 2 days at secondary school) a detention for messing with glue will motivate them? Especially when on asking the child what detention is - they shrug and say ‘ dunno’
What is going on with our education system?
Great motivation for the rest of their education I’d say 🤛
