Two Sides, a critically acclaimed three-part behind-the-scenes documentary series on the historic 2021 British & Irish Lions tour, has been nominated for an International Emmy. The doc series explores what transpired in the Springbok and Lions camps during the 2021 Tour of SA.
WE GOT AN EMMY NOMINATION 😱
This was easily the toughest project I’ve ever worked on.
Any of us who’ve ever spent some time in a COVID bubble know that it’s hard. So, adding the riots and the fact that I actually did get COVID into the mix, just made it so much more complex. At one point, Carys actually called to ask if I needed to be evacuated (for security reasons). But, as I said to her, my house was 5km away and it wouldn’t have been any safer than the room where I was isolating while I had covid.
Despite being there and shooting some if it on my phone (!), the final product is a film that still triggers many very complicated emotions for me.
Naturally, there’s deep gratitude, but also sadness and the overwhelming sense of insecurity and isolation so many of us felt. It genuinely hits me in waves, when I watch it back.
The stakes, the very real implications of every decision and the toll this took on so many people involved at various levels of the tour, is still a lot for me to wrap my head around. Even in hindsight.
I couldn’t be prouder of the fact that we delivered, despite the odds!
And to every person who worked on this tour, even if your contribution was made far outside the bubbles, in pre- or post production, in the planning or the execution of the staggeringly complex logistics and support effort, I just want to say thank you.
We did a rare thing.
