Northlands Aerodrome 🇰🇪🛩️ (also known as Northlands Airstrip or Northlands Airport, ICAO code HKFP) is a private civil airfield in Ruiru, Kiambu County, Kenya. It sits inside the large Northlands City mixed-use development, roughly 15 km from Nairobi’s city centre, near the Eastern Bypass.

Coordinates are approximately 1°11′30″S 36°58′43″E (or -1.1917, 36.9785). Elevation is around 1,510–1,540 metres (about 4,953–5,052 feet). It is visible on Google Maps and satellite imagery.

Runway and facilities
It has a single asphalt runway:
- Designation: 11/29
- Length: 1,763 metres (5,784 feet)
- Width: 30 metres
- Pavement Classification Number (PCN): 45/F/A/Y/T

This specification supports private jets and light aircraft. A modest unmarked hangar sits at one end of the runway. The site also includes a dedicated heliport for medical emergencies, VIP transport, and intra-city helicopter movements. Construction of the airstrip finished around 2023.

No public fuel availability or detailed operational frequencies are widely published, consistent with its private status. The nearest major weather station is Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (HKJK), about 8 nautical miles away.

Ownership and purpose
The aerodrome belongs to the Kenyatta family as part of their Northlands City project on family-owned land that previously hosted Brookside Dairy and Gicheha Farm. It provides convenient air access for high-net-worth residents, businesses, and the family, bypassing Nairobi’s traffic and offering an alternative to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA). It is unclear whether it will remain family-focused or eventually serve broader Northlands City residents.

It is a private domestic facility and does not appear on standard public lists of Kenya’s major airports.

Northlands City context
Northlands City is an ambitious private 11,576-acre (about 4,685-hectare) mixed-use “smart city” development in Ruiru, estimated at KSh 500 billion. Planned over 50 years in phases, it aims to house up to 250,000 residents with:
- Residential neighbourhoods (villas, townhouses, and apartments, including Northlands Heights)
- Commercial and industrial zones (including a logistics park)
- Schools (such as Peponi School)
- Amref International University (AMIU)
- Hospitals, green spaces, and other amenities

The Eastern Bypass runs through the site. Early phases are underway, with some apartments already occupied or available for rent/sale. The aerodrome and heliport form part of the master plan’s connectivity and public-facility elements.

Public reaction
Photos of the runway circulating in early 2024 generated mixed responses in Kenya. Some viewed it as a legitimate private investment and generational asset. Others questioned its exclusivity, funding sources, and whether it reflected broader issues of wealth concentration or infrastructure priorities. Politicians and social media users commented on regulation of private airstrips and comparisons to public projects.

The facility remains operational for private use as of 2026 reports, with aircraft and helicopters documented on site.

In short, Northlands Aerodrome is a modern private airstrip built as a convenience and prestige feature within one of Kenya’s largest privately driven urban developments. It is not a public commercial airport.

NIS all over, I recently took a bike from Gigiri to Kitsuru. The first question that this bodaboda guy asked me was, "Unaona aje hii siasa?"

I asked him, "Kwani iko aje?" He then went ahead to tell me that ya next year ni kama itakua mbaya. The moment I told him sijui, he kept silent until the end of the ride.
