It’s #WorldRiversDay! Alberta’s rivers have tremendous ecological, social and economic value.
Did you know that Alberta is home to seven major river basins and most Albertans get their drinking water from rivers that originate along the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains?
111 years wasted when we could have acted to avoid climate collapse but instead fossil fuel companies lied and fueled the problem and our politicians repeatedly failed to do what is needed.
We still have a window to avert disaster but it gets shorter by the day. #ActOnClimate
It’s Day 5 of our 2023 Riverbank Makeover project in Elbow Park. Today our contractor, @leafninjas is installing the solar-powered drip irrigation system that will automatically water the new plantings & wildflower pollinator garden when it’s sunny outside.
The beige mats around the new shrubs will help prevent weeds from sprouting nest to them to compete for nutrients & they’ll also hold moisture & release it slowly. The logs next to the new plantings provide wind shelter & pollinator habitat.
Today is Day 4 of our 2023 Riverbank Makeover project in Elbow Park w/ @leafninjas
Today we’re planting more native shrubs & native gardens for pollinators. Pic of drilling into birch stump is for solitary bee habitat. Logs are placed for critters & shelter for baby plants.
It’s Day 3 of our 2023 Riverbank Makeover blitz. Today is additional weed removal & we’ll be starting to plant the new Native Plants, such as Wild Rose, Wolf Willow, Sandbar Willow, & a native wildflower pollinator garden. Want to volunteer? https://t.co/Nu9M5t5qO4
It’s Day 2 of our Riverbank Makeover project for 2023 with @leafninjas . Today is invasive weed removal: Burdock (see pic)Tansy, Thistle, Ox-Eye Daisy, etc all coming out before native plants start getting planted Wednesday. Plus we found a baby vole! Volunteer spots still avail.
Some of the large logs / branches will be left on the site for bird & pollinator habitat & to serve as “nurse” logs for future plants to grow on. You can sign up to volunteer for Tues to Fri. Scan the QR code on the pic.
Today we’re starting the hard work on our new riparian restoration (Riverbank Makeover) site on the lower Elbow River with @leafninjas . Today is dead & aggressive invasive tree removal. Tomorrow is smaller invasive weed removal. Wed thru Fri is re-planting with native plants

It’s #NationalVolunteerWeek and we are highlighting #SaveNoseCreek volunteers.
Today it’s Dr. Sami Houry who has been heavily researching the Historic Trails (North Trail / Wagon Trail) in Nose Creek. His work has pointed out how little “undisturbed” land is left.
