I moved to Singapore. Found a cheap apartment listing. ¥60,000/month. Too good to be true. Viewing day: 47 OTHER PEOPLE showed up. Landlord: Highest bidder gets it. Me: This is an AUCTION?! Landlord: Welcome to Singapore real estate. First bid: ¥65,000. Second bid: ¥70,000. Me internally screaming: ¥75,000! Guy in suit: ¥100,000 plus I'll fix anything that breaks. Woman with dog: ¥110,000 and I'll water your plants when you travel. This escalated into people offering SERVICES. Someone: ¥120,000 and I'll cook you dinner once a week! Another person: ¥130,000 and I'm a doctor, free medical advice! Me panicking: ¥140,000 and I'll... I'll be very quiet? Everyone stared. Landlord: Sold. I like quiet. Month two, discovered why it was cheap. The apartment is HAUNTED. Not by ghosts. By the PREVIOUS TENANT. She still has a key. Comes by on Thursdays. Her: Oh! You must be the new person! Me: Why are you in my apartment?! Her: I lived here for 8 years. I just come back to check on things. Me: That's BREAKING AND ENTERING! Her: I have a key. It's technically visiting. Month three, she kept coming. Every Thursday. 2 PM. Would rearrange my furniture. Water plants I didn't have. Leave notes about my life choices. Note: "Your diet is terrible. I left you some vegetables." Me to landlord: She's STALKING my apartment! Landlord: She's a good tenant. Keep her happy. Me: SHE DOESN'T LIVE HERE! Landlord: Neither did the last three people. They all left. She stayed. Month five, I gave up fighting. Just accepted Thursday invasions. Started leaving her notes: "Can you organize my closet while you're here?" She did. It looked amazing. Month seven, we became ROOMMATES. Sort of. Her: I'll pay ¥40,000/month to visit on Thursdays. Me: That's insane. Her: That's ¥40,000. Me: Deal. Month nine, she invited her FRIENDS on Thursdays. Suddenly hosting a weekly gathering in my apartment. For people I don't know. They bring food. Clean. Fix things. Month eleven, the Thursday group has 12 REGULARS. They call it "Community Thursday." I just call it Thursday. Present day, I'm charging ¥10,000 per person for Thursday access. Making ¥120,000/month. From my own apartment. That I'm paying ¥140,000 for. Net loss: ¥20,000. But my apartment is always clean and I have free food. My girlfriend visiting from Tokyo: Why are there strangers in your apartment? Me: It's Thursday. Girlfriend: That explains nothing.
