2 June 2008. Bo Diddley (Ellas McDaniel) died (aged 79). He was a key figure during the transition from blues to rock ‘n’ roll in the 1950s. He influenced many artists, including: Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton and The Animals.
31 May 1961. Jimi Hendrix joined the US Army. After being arrested for car theft he had to choose between prison or joining the Army. He chose the latter and was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division, based in Kentucky. On 29 June 1962 he was granted a medical discharge
29 May 1985. 39 people were killed at Heysel Stadium, Brussels, prior to Liverpool v Juventus European Cup Final (32 were Italian, 4 Belgian, 2 French and 1 from Northern Ireland). EUFA viewed Liverpool fans most to blame and banned the club from European competitions for 6 years
27 May 1942. Reinhard Heydrich (aged 39) SS official and key figure in the organisation of the Holocaust was bomb attacked in Prague by 2 Czechoslovakian assassins, trained in Britain: Jozef Gabčík and Jan Kubiš. Heydrich died 8 days later in hospital.
24 May 1930. Hull-born Amy Johnson became the 1st woman to fly solo from England to Australia. Flying the G-AAAH Jason, she left Croydon Airport on 5 May and landed at Darwin, Northern Territory on 24 May having travelled 11,000 miles.
