A great-grandfather who allegedly raped his five-year-old great-granddaughter was granted R2,000 bail at the Blue Downs Regional Court in Cape Town on 30 December 2025.

Police confirmed in a statement that on 12 December 2025, they arrested a 62-year-old man on charges of rape. According to the child’s mother, she left her daughter in the care of the great-grandfather, and when she picked her up, she noticed the child was not walking correctly. The child then informed her that the great-grandfather had touched her inappropriately, and that it was not the first time this had happened.

The family took the child to a Thutuzela Care Centre, where doctors confirmed rape after a medical examination. The suspect was arrested but was granted R2,000 bail on 30 December 2025. The matter was postponed to 3 March 2026 for further investigation.

It is further alleged that another family member stated she was also raped by the suspect when she was only eight years old, which was three decades ago. (1/2)
