Award-Winning SAPS Trainer Neo Sedi Joins Midvaal Law Enforcement

Former SAPS tactical trainer Constable Neo Sedi has left the national police service to join Midvaal Local Municipality’s Law Enforcement Unit, ending a short but high-profile career that saw him move from frontline policing into tactical training.

Sedi joined SAPS in 2019 and was placed at Zamdela Police Station in the Free State in 2020, where he worked in the Client Service Centre and Crime Prevention. He later moved to Sasolburg Public Order Policing before being transferred to the Sedibeng K9 Unit in the Vaal.

In 2025, Sedi joined the SAPS Human Resource Development Centre (HRDC) Vaalrand as a tactical trainer and facilitator. He trained police members in firearm use, tactical policing, tactical survival techniques and annual maintenance shooting, while pursuing further studies in law.

Sedi made headlines in July 2026 after acting on intelligence while off duty and assisting in an operation in Vanderbijlpark targeting illicit cigarettes. Working with the Special Security Group High Risk Unit, he helped execute a search that resulted in the arrest of a suspect and the seizure of eight boxes of illicit Remington Gold and Chief Blue cigarettes. The haul was reported to comprise about 80,000 cigarettes.

His actions earned praise from police officials, who commended him for going beyond the call of duty.

Sedi was later recognised at the Sedibeng District Excellence Awards, where he received the District Commissioner’s Special Award for exemplary short service. He was flanked at the event by Lieutenant General Michael Motlhala, Divisional Commissioner for Protection and Security Services, and Major General Adelaide Nkhesani Mukwevho, Sedibeng District Commissioner.

His move comes as Midvaal continues to strengthen its municipal safety and law-enforcement capacity. The municipality has established a Law Enforcement Unit to conduct patrols across the area in support of SAPS and the Community Policing Forum, while its Safety Task Force has been deployed to assist with crime prevention and intelligence-led operations.

Sedi’s move keeps him within the broader Sedibeng policing environment, but shifts him from national policing and tactical training to municipal law enforcement.

During his time at SAPS, Sedi described policing as being about preparation rather than reaction, saying well-trained members are better equipped to perform with confidence and credibility both on the streets and in court.

His departure from SAPS comes after a career marked by operational experience, a move into specialised training and recognition for his initiative while off duty.
