@theHollerWitch@SeanleeSikes WV is very difficult to leave. Even those who do make it out often find themselves drawn back later in life. Everyone has some level of attachment to the place they were raised but it seems especially strong for West Virginians. Not sure why that is.
@StephenGeoRae It's fascinating that when a people immigrate to another country they seem to bring their cryptids with them. We have these things in Appalachia as well
@made_in_cosmos@Hieraaetus Another good one is "The Elizabethan World Picture". It's similar to the Discarded Image but much shorter. The author was an English Literature professor and he wanted his students to better understand Shakespeare so he laid out the high points of the late mediaeval viewpoint
@noetic_healing We are often so oblivious to just how close these things are to us, circling like sharks below the surface looking for an opening to swarm in and strike. Glory to God that you were delivered
@JohnHardyWV@WVBarbarian Mothman got snatched up by the cryptid-industrial complex and subverted into a fluffy, cuddly mascot. But cannibalistic feral humans have real potential...
@hndicpr_general A period drama about a soldier returning from war bearing a secret shame that prevents him from pursuing the woman he loves, while her shame at her impoverished background causes her to deny her true feelings for him. And also a 300' tall radioactive firebreathing death lizard.
@d_n_keane This is absolutely the main point of liturgy. People roll their eyes at "rote memorization" but it really does build a solid foundation. There is a an old rabbinic adage that says "He who repeats his lessons 100 times cannot be compared to he who repeats his lessons 101 times"
@WatcherontheWeb Rare to see the correct take on Lex Talionis. In a tribal culture fixated on vengeance "eye for an eye" sets an upper bound on violence, rather than commanding violence where none would otherwise exist.
@MemoryMedieval It's like complaining that because you can't get to the Moon on your bike it isn't a good bike. It isn't intended for that purpose. A warrior ethos cannot defeat death. Christianity does. Removing the fear of death is more useful to a warrior than any pagan warrior ethos.
@revjoshrobinson Not to beat a dead horse, but this just occurred to me. The Temple is closely associated with the Davidic kings and national sovereignty. The synagogue is Israelite religion in absence of/rejection of the Davidic king. Lots to think about there.
@revjoshrobinson The synagogue is what Israelite religion looks like in the absence of the Temple. It's a deficient construct that is the product of Israel's fall through disobedience (particularly regarding the Sabbath) into exile. It's role was to prevent another Babylonian captivity. (cont)
