Bos. strategy in 1st gm was literally, holding/bodying all opps. players in transition w/ball. Ref should've hit cards early, red if necessary. It would've been somewhat enjoyable at that point.

Plenty of youth league, HS, D3 NCAA, heck, even some bad EU league games are sloppy.
Time of possession and control does not offset the longball to a forward with speed and some shooting ability. Get a lead; squat 11 in back 3rd--kickball for the W.

@Mobberleymini @JoeTheWino @NealGardner_ Brazil has been awful in their backfield & goal since day 1. All offensive-minded players; many times, undersized but superb (Globe trotters of soccer). Works until you play a defensive counter/set piece team with size (Germany).

Depth=control. Game is about goals though

Every team lacks depth in one significant area. Elite teams have a superstar. Challengers have a stud, a good goalie, avg depth, & complimentary scheme.
15 ranked Italy had depth but no superstars=didn't qualify.

@PopeClemson1st Gooch directing US program; you'd think (as a sweeper) he'd highlight the lack of defensive development/talent within current US program to all league leaders (youth, ODP, HS, NCAA, MLS, etc.). Noonan and others should be on speed dial, "what's soured our defensive crop?".

US is hand sport heavy and we have goalies in the world cup that can't position their hands correctly to catch/stop a ball.
