Idemitsu - a coal miner - has proposed a SOLAR PROJECT. If approved or refused, either side can challenge decision on merits in Court. If the project were a COAL EXPANSION, practice has been to deny merits appeal rights. This make no sense @paulscullymp

Tanya Plibersek's decision to approve a new coal expansion (Boggabri Mod 8) in NSW yesterday just made the NSW Government's job harder.
NSW is not on track to meet any of its legislated targets, including the 70% cut by 2035, which this decision will impact.
Attended a very informative seminar about the BoM–CSIRO State of the Climate 2024 report. A finding that hit me hard was that the extreme year of 2019, Australia's hottest and driest on record, will become an average year between 2021-2040. As a reminder, 2019 looked like this...
Thank you all @RisingTideAus for a magnificent, bold and joyous Protestival (contender for word of the year 2025?). So many great Australians coming together. Huge effort from you mob and all the volunteers. Respect.

“The people arrested today are everyday Australians, driven to direct action by the Albanese Government’s refusal to act to avert a climate catastrophe”
The job of the NSW Productivity and Equality Commission is to provide "objective, evidence-based advice to the Government".
As @RisingTideAus and community gather in Newcastle this weekend, I'm asking @ChrisMinnsMP to heed this advice:

Hats off to @RisingTideAus for a great snap demo @johaylen's office today re govt attempt to shutdown Newcastle coal protest this weekend. Disappointing that when forced to make a decision between supporting community or coal expansions, the Minns Govt chose coal.
"If Minns wants to live in a society where protest isn’t allowed then he should move to North Korea.”

"The actions taken in the next 18 months are crucial to staying within the temperature goals of the Paris Agreement.”

Tanya Plibersek's approval of coal expansions (in a climate crisis) this afternoon is bad news for NSW's newly-minted Net Zero Commission. NSW is not on track to meet 2030 and 2035 GHG targets. These projects make their job a lot harder. A short 🧵

Narrabri U/ground is the 6th highest-emitting coal mine in NSW. It's Scope 1 GHGs increased by 51% in FY23. Whitehaven Coal predict they will keep increasing (they think the can abate less than 1% of Scope 1 GHGs from the expansion that Tanya Plibersek just approved). #shocker
Re methane - here's 1 reason why the EPA needs to step in where NSW Planning has failed. Russell Vale coal mine promised an annual 4% cut in their GHGs. There was no cut. GHGs increased by 90% in 2022-23. But no penalty or consequences for them. @NSW_EPA

SYDNEY: Protest coal expansions with me next Wed morn (8am, 28 Aug): https://t.co/VFeRCjrldq
Why?
👉 "It's up to governments to make decisions that deal with the issue of climate change. Not pretend they're doing something while they keep approving new [coal] projects." #nswpol
"I think that when we see a multi-billion-dollar corporation, hiring a multi-billion-dollar US law firm to go after environmental charities for legal costs, we do have to ask whether people ought to be protected from this type of legal strategy." https://t.co/28qcXp8rUv
