Man beaten, tied to scooter and dragged over ₹30,000 debt; five held

A man was allegedly abducted, confined overnight, beaten and dragged along a road after being tied to a scooter over a ₹30,000 payment dispute at Bhogapuram in Vizianagaram district of AP.

Police arrested five persons and registered multiple cases after a video showing the assault surfaced on social media. The victim was identified as Yel Rajesh, a resident of Ramachandrapeta.

According to police, Rajesh had agreed to purchase a motorcycle from mechanic V Mahesh for ₹25,000. While taking the vehicle for a test ride, Rajesh allegedly hit a police constable’s car and damaged it. Mahesh’s brother reportedly paid ₹5,000 to the constable towards repairs to settle the matter.

Police said Rajesh subsequently failed to pay ₹30,000 the cost of the motorcycle and the repair amount, and had allegedly been avoiding payment.

Mahesh and his friend L Sriram allegedly intercepted and abducted Rajesh while he was travelling and confined him overnight on September 5. When Rajesh said he was unable to pay the amount immediately, the accused allegedly assaulted him the following morning.

Police said Mahesh, Sriram and their associates—B Venkata Rao, N Govind and V Appa Rao—removed Rajesh’s shirt and tied ropes around his hands and neck. They allegedly dragged him along the road before tying him to a scooter and pulling him behind the vehicle.

The assault was recorded prompting police action. All five accused were arrested.
