I turned Lou's putting chart into a Google Sheet for anybody interested. Added some explanations, but if I'm off on anything let me know @LouStagner. https://t.co/2nE9RClGiH
Been thinking about Tiger after watching him play 18 holes today and been trying to figure out what it means that he was successful with 4 different swings. (Hear me out, and stay for the story about him practicing in full rain gear in Orlando in July.)
Is it testament to an unparalleled amount of innate talent? Does it prove that your training and your mindset are more important than your mechanics?
After reading this in @AdamMGrant’s new book, I think it’s the latter. (I’m not saying that mastery of fundamentals doesn’t matter. It does!)
Grant was writing about the necessity of embracing discomfort in the pursuit of growth.
“Sometimes you even learn better in the mode that makes you the most uncomfortable,” Grant wrote. “This is the first form of courage: being brave enough to discomfort.”
Also: “Once people saw discomfort as a mark of growth, they were motivated to stretch beyond their comfort zones.”
There may not be anything more uncomfortable for a golfer than a swing overhaul. The amount of deliberate practice that is necessary is incredible. It’s time-consuming, fraught with failure and, well, uncomfortable. But Tiger seemed to love it.
Going through the process so many times had to give him an incredible amount of insight into his swing, each version of it. But it also showed an incredible tolerance for discomfort. And you know what else is uncomfortable? The back nine on Sunday. He embraced discomfort where others fled from it.
So now to the story about Tiger practicing in full rain gear in an Orlando summer, dripping with sweat. Why was he doing it? Because he was preparing for The Open. He wanted to get on Trackman and get his launch numbers while wearing his rain suit so that he knew ahead of time how it would impact his swing and ball flight.
I heard Sean Foley tell this story recently. His point was that what made Tiger great was his willingness to do the things other weren’t.
Like embrace discomfort.
@GolfweekRingler Hopefully they can be changed moving forward, tough to calculate the close calls if we don't know the actual head to heads. #foodforthought
@CMcCormickGolf 💯! Sometimes it's even more beneficial to watch a player play when he/she isn't playing well. How do they manage a tough hole, round, day? It's easy to be a good person when you're playing well, how do you act when it's all not going your way?...
For all of the “this field blows” reply robots out there. Just know there are 50 of these guys in the field this week ready to take advantage of the opportunity. It will be a life changing Sunday for someone. Worth watching
@KylePorterCBS It’s the deviation from the average for the field. From any spot on the course, there’s an average amount of strokes to hole out. After each shot, you reassess from the new location. The change between the two, determines the strokes gained/lost for the last shot.

As the static lives we tend to live nowadays don’t help how me move + feel both on and off the course ⛳️😩

To any young person looking to play sports on college:
The best way to ensure a coach knows about you is to contact the coach yourself. Email, texting, phone calls and even social media messages are all acceptable ways for student-athletes to contact college coaches.
